Last year, speaking to a conference of aviation trainers, John Alonso, CTO, OutStart , observed that ninety percent of mobile learning pilot projects he is aware of have failed. The reason was that the implementations were not being driven by a business problem, but rather by the coolness of the technology. Ninety percent!

Outstart, who purchased Hot Lava, a mobile learning company, and who advertises in large size on their web site about mobile learning, doesn’t have an app. iPhone – new ones include Free Conferencing, BT Engage Meeting & Conference Plus. The #1 selling tablet in the world, iPad and its new iPad2 and there are 4 vendors.

In addition, longtime mobile learning tool provider Hot Lava Software was purchased by LCMS platform provider Outstart and interest in their combined offerings was well received. In my opinion, this was the biggest news of 2009 for everyone involved in the enterprise mlearning space. As they say, the rising tide lifts all ships.
