In my latest directory, 393 LMS vendors – global, of which 34 or so are open source systems. In a market this size, and with so many vendors overly focused on the U.S. and not necessarily worldwide (which should be the case), there is bound to be those vendors who are seeking new opportunities. It was a myth.

Open Source Product of the Year (i.e. Game based learning. Mashups, Google charts. Greater usage of open source content authoring tools, across all sectors, not just education and regardless of tech skill set or instructional developer background. I said it when it game out and I will repeat it again.

A calling to a large number of vendors (small, medium and big), are all reporting strong numbers in January, with many saying that January 2011, was their best month – numbers and business wise, in the last few years. Greater number of vendors switching to only SAAS or “in the cloud&# rather than self-hosted.

Revenues across the board are up, profit margins are healthy and competition is on-going (always a good thing). Some common traits include: Broadway Effect: Front end looks too busy, end users cannot figure out what to click, where to go, what to avoid – lots of information, flashiness, overload of the senses. The Negatives.

I include Learning Portals, LCMSs, as part of the mix. Open Source Systems – That have to be 100% free to be considered. Extended Enterprise – System must have e-comm, multi-tenet – fully skinnable, additional functionality. Open Source LMS of the Year. Made specifically for business.

More vendors enabling the use of APIs – i.e. people can create their own API and integrate them into the LMS/Learning Portal vendor’s system, this equally means you can create mashups too. Consumers expect a one business day response. This is a global issue and is not limited to the size of the vendor.

The twist to all this, is that for the Big Dog vendors or those whose main target is large size clients, this isn’t an issue – okay, not the Q/A, in fact, it is a big problem for many of them – rather it is inability to handle the client base. The spin of course, is that open source systems enable APIs.
