Cammy Beans Learning Visions: Second Life Backlash and Controversy

Learning Visions

Monday, August 13, 2007 Second Life Backlash and Controversy The Second Life naysayers seems to be gaining ground lately. And Im not implying that Im a Second Life naysayer. 1) Donald Taylor provides a little summary of some of the recent talk in Second Life Backlash: After all the hype Second Life has had, there is bound to be some push back.

Cammy Beans Learning Visions: My Second Second Life Experience

Learning Visions

Wednesday, August 15, 2007 My Second Second Life Experience Yesterday I posted about the Second Life Backlash and Controversy , with corporations supposedly abandoning SL and moving on. And Karl Kapp talks about the inevitable hype curve in which Second Life is now in the midst. I wanted to check out Renaissance Island, the Second Louvre Museum, and other areas of interest shown in the video. Im Bliss Yue).

Cammy Beans Learning Visions: Building Community in Second Life: Renaissance Island

Learning Visions

Friday, August 24, 2007 Building Community in Second Life: Renaissance Island As you know, Ive been trying to walk-the-talk and experiment a bit with Second Life, role my virtual sleeves up and see what all the fuss is about. Last week, I visited Renaissance Island and wrote about it in My Second Second Life Experience. I even heard that teher are some people who are conducting virtual training sessions on Second Life, some of them may be paid.

e-Clippings (Learning As Art): Big Basket of Stuff #1: Wikis, IMs, and 3D

IMS Caliper: Caliper is the latest standard from IMS. To understand the difference between the two standards, it’s important to note that IMS and Caliper are driven by higher ed and thus of particular interest to the Educause crowd. IMS’s best known standard, LTI, allows textbook companies to package online course content and ship it with their textbooks, regardless of the implementing university’s LMS.

Cammy Beans Learning Visions: Women, Gaming & the Guild Master Ceiling

Learning Visions

A basic premise of the book is that gamers are on their way into the workplace and will be changing how we do business. Im concerned that women will be excluded if such a focus is put on gaming skills -- or at least the gamer label. Im just raising some questions. I guess Im saying the focus should be less on "gaming" and more on use of new technology (social networking sites, gadgets, etc.)

Cammy Beans Learning Visions: Facebook for the Enterprise

Learning Visions

Wednesday, June 27, 2007 Facebook for the Enterprise Im still mucking around in Facebook, trying to get it. Provides some real examples of how business-folk are using FB; compares Facebook (emotional attachment) to LinkedIn (static resume). But for the first time I can merge my social and business lives in ways that are not intrusive, that feel intuitive and which are both highly productive and deeply satisfying.

Cammy Beans Learning Visions: Hiring Women in 1943. You Go, Girl!

Learning Visions

This has very little to do with eLearning - although Im sure those of you with a creative mindset could think of something! Its certainly good for a laugh on a busy morning. Given the female employee a definite day-long schedule of duties so that theyll keep busy without bothering the management for instructions every few minutes. Even though a girls husband or father may swear vociferously, shell grow to dislike a place of business where she hears too much of this.

Cammy Beans Learning Visions: Where Are All the Women Part II

Learning Visions

But perhaps this is just a general business-blog issue. Blogs by Women The blogs displayed today on the home page had titles such as "More Women Waiting to Tie the Knot", "Harvard Promotes its First Woman to Position of President", "Trends in Pregnancies." -- marriage, pregnancy, health issues, parenting -- the Harvard story was the only business-related story. Now, as a woman, Im definitely interested in those topics.

Cammy Beans Learning Visions: All Work And No Learning.

Learning Visions

Lately, work has just felt way too busy. Sometimes I just want to punch in the proverbial time card and go home and do the rest of my life. In June, when the bags under my eyes are mile-wide, Im sure Ill be wishing for the peace and quiet of endless projects. Sometimes just to spice things up, Ill pretend Im a detective and that my work task is a mystery that needs to be solved. The best of life, the best of the best stories or Long Road.

Cammy Beans Learning Visions: Describing What You Do: Instructional Design

Learning Visions

Me: Im an instructional designer. Im sort of distracted by the naked boy who just ran by (not mine). Ellen Wagner says, " I Ds help transform intangible information assets into things of great business or epistemological value." I follow of course with “I design training for businesses…&# 9:34 AM Michelle said. I think Ill just start off with Marks "I design training for businesses." And then they think Im a flippin genius!!!!

Cammy Beans Learning Visions: All The Worlds A-Twitter

Learning Visions

Like Tracy Hamilton , Im enjoying the endless thought streams. Im having fun hearing the stream of peoples activities and thoughts ("ambient intimacy"), but is that all there is to it? SoulSoup sent me a link to a post hed worked up on Twitter for business. It feels endless now -- all the places I need to go to keep in touch with my peeps: my phone, my email account (Outlook for work, gmail for life); Facebook; Google Reader; Twitter. Im a convert. Yes, Im an English major who writes mostly text bullets instead of novels. So Im curious: what drove you to revisit theory? Cammy, Im glad to hear you so revved up. Jane -- In theory, Im not against theory. Im still of that mindset. Unfortunately, life has been getting in the way of my informal degree intentions, but my brain has started to resurface of late and Im back on board. Now Im reading Cold Spring Harbor.

Cammy Beans Learning Visions: The Value of Instructional Designers

Learning Visions

But Im not sure I can get people to hold their answers back. Sorry Tony, but Im going to jump into the conversation now. Dont worry though; Im sure Ill still have more to say if you do this for the Big Question for February. Im on a smaller team though, so we are basically the "one-stop shop." If Im giving someone job advice on how to get into the field of instructional design, Im still going to tell them that additional technology skills will help.

Cammy Beans Learning Visions: 31 Days: Day 25 (Go Shopping)

Learning Visions

My life in no way supports random trips to the shopping mall, so instead Ill look at my current shopping habits and needs: I need to get in and out of the store as quickly as I can, getting exactly what I need. Often I have two small kids in tow or Im trying to check ten things off a list during my lunch hour. A good aggregator (like Stephen Downes) will get me the info I need so Im not missing the really juicy stuff. Im sure many of you are the same. Its too busy.

Cammy Beans Learning Visions: Getting Pysched for FaceBook

Learning Visions

Monday, June 25, 2007 Getting Pysched for FaceBook Im definitely feeling out-of-my element in this whole FaceBook thing. Im trying to get into it and discover its potential professional uses. And Ive joined a group: FaceBook for Business in which Ive posted some questions, gotten some answers, and been asked to participate in a beta test for a FaceBook widget. Im just scratching the surface, I suppose. Im feeling lonely and really nerdy.

Cammy Beans Learning Visions: College Women on Gamers: They Giggle

Learning Visions

That said, Im a little concerned that the gamer mentality is sometimes presented as important to corporate culture and that as a result women should get into gaming. This seems to echo the stale pattern in which women adapt to a male-dominated business culture. Im a bit of an über a-hole when it comes to stereotypical representations - the giggly "girl" (which is the name of this episode) just lights my match. I play geography games, but Im not a gamer.

Cammy Beans Learning Visions: Market Differences in eLearning

Learning Visions

Monday, March 23, 2009 Market Differences in eLearning Im a fan of the number 42. Oracle has Oracle University that provides services or graphics, editing and publishing to the other Business Units who need this for a price, but several times the BUs choose to have only IDs who would be required to create their own content, whether ILT, elearning, demos, etc using rapid development tools, to optimize the cost and get maximum output.

Im sure I could do a better job describing this, so let me know if Ive been clear. Sounds a little like an expert system or even just a simple business rules engine.

Its all done with the best intentions though - I see something and think - "Wow, thats cool, I need to blog about that" - then life gets in the way and I end up with tons of items that never get blogged. My solution to resolving this could be to do something like declaring " bookmark bankruptcy " but I dont feel like doing that; instead, Im going to hold a blog-a-thon.

Cammy Beans Learning Visions: Making Six Sigma Training Fun

Learning Visions

Cammy: Although I like to think Im good-humored, I am leery of "humor" or "fun" (scare quotes are deliberate) injected into training like salt water into a frozen turkey. Cammy Beans Learning Visions: Instructional Designers: Do You Have a Degree in ID?

Im curious what other folks experiences has been. He told me that I had no business applying because my 5 years of education and training experience was totally irrelevant to instructional design. Im so happy to see you post this up. Im struggling with this right now. Im not on to trying to source another college or university to try out. Mark Oehlert

So someone tell me if Im wrong but here is how I am seeing this.the way IT departments are currently incentivized - their ideal situation would be zero users and no connection to the Internet. Im not casting stones here, in fact in a way Im apologizing to all the IT departments for whom Ive caused trouble by demanding applications and access that did nothing to honor the way the were rated on the job performance - essentially I just kept asking them to do me favors.

Learning Visions

This hasnt gotten onto my radar before -- Im not sure if there are any state-funded online programs in Massachusetts. Within higher ed, Im sure well continue to see growth in online, but it is starting to plateau a bit. In that respect, I do think its inevitable--the business opportunity is too great to not attract people. Im with Stephen that we need different kinds of learning options for different kids and different needs.
