Knowledge and Data – The brains of a business!

All successful businesses, big or small, have one thing in common – Extensive business knowledge. In small organizations such knowledge is restricted to the people who founded the business, and maybe a few key employees that drive company strategy. Before going any further, let us understand what knowledge means to a business. Storing, searching, accessing and using this knowledge in the right way is together known as Knowledge Management (KM).

How Knowledge Management Changed Everything!

After the near-mythical Boston conference of 1993, legend has it that in 1994, business guru Tom Davenport gave the first description of Knowledge Management: “Knowledge Management is the process of capturing, distributing, and effectively using knowledge”.

The differences between learning in an e-business and learning in a social business

Jane Hart

Although the advent of e-technology in the late 1990s changed businesses into e-businesses, this was essentially about automating existing business thinking and practices. Although a “social business” is powered by new social technologies, it is not the technology itself that makes the difference, it’s not about layering social approaches on the old industrial age thinking, but a fresh, new mindset and approach to working and learning.

Knowledge. Defining the Problem. Somewhat.

The E-Learning Curve

Knowledge is a kind of cognitive or conceptual dark matter that we know must exist, but measuring and quantifying it, and demonstrating it is a complex business Knowledge. How Knowledge Management techniques can be used to enhance training

It’s a lot to keep track of, no matter the size of your business organization. The goal of knowledge management (KM) is to enable organizations to use the knowledge they possess — individually or as a team — to achieve the goals they’ve set for themselves.

I’m attending KM World virtually for the next two days. A dozen years ago I needed to get up to speed on business process automation, knowledge management, and workflow systems. I attended KM World in San Jose gratis and came away with great foundation knowledge. Half a dozen years later, I got Adobe to pay for a beer bash to enable top thinkers in learning (attending DevLearn) to cross-fertilize with the KM World speakers.

The benefits of knowledge management (KM) are a monster value-add to any organization. Some might think large enterprises require significant resources to carry forward a KM initiative. Is, KM , as some claim become the fiefdom of experts with metricians and quants creating a lexicon and modality to which only they hold the password? I know there are nuances and specifics necessary in many systems and it’s no different in KM.

When Knowledge Management Hurts

Jay Cross

Wonderful short article in Harvard Business Publishing by Freek Vermuelen describes how top-down informationbases actually get in the way of doing business. Lately, I’ve been thinking we’re ready to pull down the silos housing, respectively, Training, CLO, KM, OD, and Corporate Communications. Strategically re-configuring the CLO+KM+OD+Com function needs to bolster the worthwhile functions and shut down the unworthy ones.

Method and madness – Disconnect between learning & knowledge

Learning Cafe

I’ve oftened wondered about the organisational disconnect between Learning and KM/Documentation areas. Learning has the role of ‘teaching’ or embedding in memory, while KM ensures all procedures are captured and delivered (usually within the business). For years the model has perpetuated a sort of ‘doubling up’ on effort around the information people need to perform on the job.

Not that long ago, making a business call from a unusual location was a novelty. Today, joining a business meeting from the beach, major expressway, or even an airplane at 12 km altitude doesn’t raise an eyebrow.
