I Believe in the Importance of Personal Knowledge Management

The answer lies across several domains of a knowledge worker’s practice. These are good practices that help us grow our knowledge, but what we really need are mindful, disciplined processes for managing it on a daily basis. What we need is to exercise personal knowledge management, or PKM. PKM is distinct from organizational knowledge management, which is widely used today. Three Key Components of PKM.

The key to informal learning is autonomy

In organizations comprised largely of knowledge workers, each with unique responsibilities, tasks may not follow reproducible processes, just as every artist’s creation is unique. Still, every worker’s current activity uses skills developed through past experience, draws upon his or her whole knowledge base, and has some relationship with past and future work of the organization.

It has helped me to develop my personal learning network (PLN) and enabled my PKM. A process to be mandated by management/supervisors/organizations with defined rules. The 9:00 am to 5:00 pm notion of work is all but vanishing, at least for the knowledge workers. The baby boomers are retiring taking their tacit knowledge and experience with them. Disruptive business models are upending traditional org structures.
