The Business Web

Tony Karrer

Simultaneously, companies like Google and Yahoo have announced their intention to compete against Microsoft Exchange by offering a version of their consumer email services repurposed for business. Gmail for Domains ([link] ) and Yahoo Business Email ( [link] ) are serious competitors to the traditional email server franchise. And, many other companies are finally delivering a wide variety of software as service offerings from Business Objects to Adobe to Skype.

State of the LMS 2012

eLearning 24-7

The data shows that what many vendors assume end users want is far from accurate. Too many vendors are focusing on talent/performance management as the next feature/component in their systems. On the total number of employees, over 44% were from businesses 500 or less employees. By the mid to late 2000′s, the split returned with LCMS and LMS (and yes, there were vendors who called themselves LCMSs for as long as e-learning – online learning – has existed).

E-Learning Early Indicators

Vendors were saying, lets “wait on those&# or “our customers are not requesting them, so we are holding off&#. Apparently, the potential customers and even clients are speaking and those vendors are listening. Not just a few vendors, the industry as a whole. A significant number of vendors, reported higher revenue and sales numbers in 2010, then in 2009. A number of vendors whose real focus is the Talent Management/Performance Management market.

Latest LMS Trends – The Truth is No Longer a Stranger

eLearning 24-7

In my latest directory, 393 LMS vendors – global, of which 34 or so are open source systems. In a market this size, and with so many vendors overly focused on the U.S. and not necessarily worldwide (which should be the case), there is bound to be those vendors who are seeking new opportunities. Folding up shop and switching to a new market: Talent/Performance Management, new product lines not tied to e-learning, services.

What’s hurting the LMS market

eLearning 24-7

Revenues across the board are up, profit margins are healthy and competition is on-going (always a good thing). Make no mistake, there are plenty of vendors out there who believe in the concept of focusing on features and forgetting about usability, under the guise that people would rather have lots of cool blinky things rather than usability. There are a plethora of vendors out there, with blinders on. . Yet, many vendors are doing exactly that.

What I like about conferences is the ability to see the latest products and hear the pitches from the vendors. Yet, for all that do it, their are equal number of vendors who do not. Vendors who do not have anyone in their booth, during expo times – I see this at all shows, regardless of the product or market; but at e-learning/training shows you see it a lot OR you see them eating in their booth. If that is the case, then why has the e-learning market failed to grasp the concept of real social exchange based upon job role or new employees by connecting them with fellow folks tied to those areas, but at different companies or businesses? Vendors such as Edmodo, enables teachers at various schools across the world to communicate with each other. I’ve heard it from vendors. Many consumers, I surmise are doing it already without even realizing it, and even some vendors are too. Preferably on/off synch, but as I mentioned in my LinkedIn mini-post, most learning system vendors still are not on/off synch with said mobile app. The majority of vendors have two mobile apps – one for iOS and one for Android (and yes, it is easy to say one mobile app with two different OS versions).

One of the common reasons I hear from knowledge workers inside large organizations for not following the suggestions I provide is that the organization itself puts up barriers to working this way. Business’s lingering love of bureaucracy, process, and legacy technology has fallen completely out of sync with what people need to do their best.
