I have never taken a course in adult learning theory. My current business card says Im a "Manager of Instructional Design". I started my professional life in operations -- behind the scenes helping people do their jobs better. In fact, I dont have any kind of masters degree at all. I have never taken a class in pedagogy.

To me, "industry" evokes the big business machine and not the customer. Believe me, I share (any) frustrations that the ID might have about this aspect for there is a challenging condition that has to be met in learning that is different from other implicit requirements that have scalar qualities rather than multidimensional ones.

An initial note – on the topic of what these virtual trainers have to look like in terms of graphics, I’d recommend Scott McCloud’s Understanding Comics and Raph Koster’s Theory of Fun. So again, I think we will need to focus on the qualities of the human/machine interaction that are important – like the quality of conversation.

It also requires a certain skill set to know how to take a big picture approach to match learning solutions to specific business goals.
