Skillsoft – An Analyst Perspective

eLearning 24-7

A behemoth, impressive and at the same time, seen in a “Evil Empire” perspective among other vendors in the mid 2000s. This is also about a vendor who lost their way. A vendor who made not only poor business decisions with the likes of Percipio, but also with the monumental blunder of acquiring SumTotal. . Layoffs meanwhile started at Skillsoft in November 2019, then again in February 2020. Skillsoft Files for Chapter 11 Bankruptcy.

One of these platforms is Percipio by Skillsoft. Certifications are doable from big name vendors such as Amazon, Google, Cisco, Microsoft and more. Share Link – I debated about listing this in poor, because I still see zero value in this – other vendors do it too, and I see zero value in that as well. 3rd party content is available within the platform, they continue to sign up vendors – so that is a plus. Skillsoft buying SumTotal – My Take

eLearning 24-7

Like many of you, I was surprised to find out that Skillsoft is in the process of acquiring SumTotal. The reason for the acquisition at least from a press release and information on the purchase (and available for viewing on the Skillsoft site), screams of HCM (Human Capital Management). Combination of Skillsoft and SumTotal offers comprehensive, content-rich HR solutions. I am always bothered when vendors see the entities as one in the same.

This isn’t a beauty contest, nor a pay for play (I NEVER accept that, nor play that game, nor do I accept any referral fees or whatever some vendors offer for recommending them). These are vendors who have been around a long time, build share of the market and generally speaking had early name recognition which has helped them in build business.

#HRTECH Learning Vendors Preview – Who to see and who to avoid

Well, not yet, but it is coming up and with that are all those wonderful vendors and that magical expo. But one of the biggest problems I see at such shows are the number of vendors who in hindsight I wished I avoided. I recall at ATD this past year, a vendor who was trying to sell people ahead of time their LMS. And, because many of the other vendors who are here at HR Tech, really are just average to poor (but not everyone). SumTotal by Skillsoft.

So, We Talked to a Vendor About Learning Technology…

CLO Magazine

Change is constant today, and keeping pace with fast-moving business demands takes deliberate effort — this often impedes our best intentions to think forward, work strategically or adopt new practices. How important is it for vendors to listen to customers? It is absolutely critical and mutually beneficial for vendors and customers to develop an ongoing partnership — beyond sale and implementation. As a vendor, we can’t afford to guess what our customers need.

How to choose the right LMS

eLearning 24-7

The minus: vendors come out of the woodwork to tell you their system meets those needs. No vendor could say honestly that their system is the best for you, because they are missing a lot of information. Then spend the time to identify the right system for you and your business. Write vendors’ names on pencils and throw them at the ceiling. Whichever sticks – is your vendor. There is no one size fits all vendor. So many choices out there.

Customer Complaints, How to Avoid the Traps

eLearning 24-7

Sometimes it is a result of the vendor, other times it is a failure of due diligence on the part of the soon to be customer. The vendor’s salesperson tells you want you want to hear. I expect nothing less from the vendor. If the vendor offers a couple of solutions, not all of those clients are going to be using the same solution – so who is using the solution like me? At one time, vendors were honest, stating “white papers&# as marketing materials.

When they hit stride, other vendors take notice and soon, the lemming revolution begins. It’s a business marketplace for buyers and sellers. Not, some 3rd party aggregator like Skillsoft or Element K, where you can purchase courses from. Content – Change the Narrative

eLearning 24-7

Too many times I find that when talking about content, 3rd party content providers, content driven strategies from learning system vendors (which is quite hot) and marketplaces place more of a general approach to buying and pushing it. Leadership, Business Skills, Safety, Compliance-related, Software, Coaching and Software skills. It is weird on how brand names from a content standpoint is a key driver in choosing who is going to be with that learning system vendor.

Nowadays thanks to the growth of Learning Engagement Platforms, whereas content is a requirement – an essential no less, LMS vendors are jumping head first into the content marketplace that is viewable by all clients (rather than pitching the content via the phone or other comm method). Picking a LMS vendor who says their system interfaces/integrates with your HRIS platform. Nearly every LMS vendor will state this. I rarely find a LMS vendor who says that they do not support or do not have experience integrating with HRIS system ABC. An easy way to do it, is to ask for a list of companies who have had their HRIS platform (specifically yours) with the vendor’s LMS. Now for the LMS vendor themselves.

Course Marketplace as “System includes and or offers content” This is in relation towards learning system vendors, especially in the LMS, learning platform space and not so much LEPs (although some could do a better job at stating it in clarity). . Another vendor has one-page articles if you will, where learners print out and use. If you buy through a content marketplace on an LMS, LEP or other types of learning systems, the advantage is that the vendor (LMS for example) is responsible for putting it onto your system, and responsible for making sure it is updated (again, laugh here), and adding new content (again, assuming you bought it).
