I identify the Big Dogs as SumTotal by Skillsoft (yes, that is the actual name), Cornerstone OnDemand, Saba, SucessFactors and Oracle Taleo (although, I ask myself who is using this and if you still are why?). Why would you want to do business with a vendor who is selling a system, but has zero interest in learning about the history of our space? The system supports every course standard including xAPI and PENS, but misses out on an LRS and content marketplace. If those items are nothing burgers for you, then this is a system to consider.

While I have (continue to have) real concerns about privacy and security issues, if a person leaves your company/business/school/university and so forth and goes some other place that doesn’t have an LRS – where does their data record sit – an LRS has potential. Ability to upload a course or courses from a 3rd party course/content provider (example: Wiley, Skillsoft, etc.). SCORM 2004 3rd edition, SCORM 2004 4th edition, AICC, PENS, xAPI, CMI-5). I have worked at places where we had business units and would charge them for our online courses/content. As long as it has one of these.

Most recently I joined dominKnow, the makers of Claro, as their SVP of business development. I think xAPI has managed to do that, but I don’t see SCORM disappearing anytime soon. Before we jump into PENS, let’s begin in the authoring tool industry. In the authoring tool industry there seems to be hesitancy to go into the cloud.
