Working with E-Learning Vendors: Tips for Working with Vendors

Over the last few blogs, I’ve given some tips on how to find a vendor through a Request for Information (RFI) and Request for Proposal (RFP) , and then how to evaluate the responses you get to select the best vendor to meet your needs. During development, always keep your design document and other guidelines up-to-date with anything the vendor promised they would do. If the vendor supplies the contract, make sure you are protected. Be good to your vendor, though.

A Look Back at E-Learning in 2012

Mobile Learning. LMSs – Finally vendors took notice. Sadly though many still are in the dark on true mobile learning – i.e. not accessing their platform via a mobile web browser. Authoring Tools – With only a small sample of vendors that are SaaS based, pickings are slim. Those who aren’t are either offering native apps with online/offline synch or performing the shell game via the mobile web browser and calling it mobile learning.

Assign x users to one group, assign “y” to another group – with each group having different courses, learning content, etc. The problem though is what should be universal standards – and for the vast majority are – there are still learning management systems that just fail to grasp that concept. Long has tools such as Studio and Captivate been on the higher side, the same can be said for vendors such as Rapid Intake and dominKnow. Because other vendors are getting into the act as well. There are more vendors in the LMS space under 10K then in the past – thus meeting the markets’ needs yet the authoring tool space is seeing a spike in prices. Product Review: Totara

Vendors in this space include Docebo, eFront, Litmos and of course Totara. My Learning tab – shows alerts, recent learning, upcoming events. Graphical progress bar – basically less text or funky icons that only the vendor knows what is – example, a recall one vendor using a floppy disk to represent an online course. Calendar – Love it here, but when you hover over the dates, shows a tiny box if an event is available. My Learning.

Evolving the E-Learning Experience for the 21st Century

What always stuns me are vendors who state they know what their learners want, but in reality have no clue, because they themselves do not see the technology and its usage among the masses. E-Mail. The growing number of businesses leaving Microsoft Outlook to Internet e-mail is amazing. I see this as one of the most important features for any learning management system, open source or commercial. Innovation drives the market (regardless if it is e-learning or not).

How many of you have seen vendors respond to your questions? A: Virtually every LMS vendor out there in the marketplace provides these features. Examples: E-mail notification via SMS. Mobile learning – it might surprise you to know that 75-80% of all systems in the space, currently do not offer any type of mobile learning, the number goes up even higher for online/offline synch. Smart App for TV – One LMS vendor. A: Depends on the vendor.

There is a growing list of vendors, including small/mid size that are adding talent management components that match the Big Dog systems. A couple of vendors have added HRIS modules. It is interesting to note, that many of the vendors are targeting the SMB space, especially the small size (less than 500 employees) market. You don’t have to go to funkytown to see some feature sets that put the “WoW” back into learning. Built in E-mail that blocks viruses, spam plus you can send out of the LMS. Latest E-Learning Trends – Some good, some bad

After one quarter (for most companies) into the fiscal calendar year, it is time to see what the future holds in our space. I mean ever&# , from a senior executive at a mid to large size vendor that has been in the market for several years. Across the board, a large number of vendors (from small to large) saw increases in their quarter numbers. Especially, when vendors released their 2010 final numbers and saw big increases from the previous year. E-Learning 24/7.

Granted it does not include bloggers (I hand them out- more on that in a sec) or believe it or not – other vendors, but it is a nice list nevertheless. Nothing wrong with that, mind you, after all when a company or vendor wins such an award it makes for great advertising and marketing. I’m not sure if they are using some calendar prior to the Gregorian, because that is the only way, I could understand the announcements. E-Learning 24/7 Approach.

What I like about conferences is the ability to see the latest products and hear the pitches from the vendors. Yet, for all that do it, their are equal number of vendors who do not. E-Learning Trade Shows. Vendors who do not have anyone in their booth, during expo times – I see this at all shows, regardless of the product or market; but at e-learning/training shows you see it a lot OR you see them eating in their booth. Questions to Ask Ur Prospective LMS Vendor

If you are like the thousands of other people exploring the purchase of a learning management system, the key to success is asking the right questions. . For people who are working on certification, does your system provide e-mail reminders to end users whose certification is near expiration and thus they need to go into the system and complete it? What about e-mail reminders for the following (time frame) to renew? Go directly to the 3rd party vendor whose courses they are.

That said, there were some hiccups and from an entire vendor wise (expo here) angle, some unique and some, uh. I can honestly say, the ATD show is changing from ILT driven (it has always been that way) to e-learning improvement.
