Vendors who have partnerships with WebEx or whomever they use, typically require you to purchase a license, which is separate from the system. Many will offer or have the ability to purchase the license for you, rather than you having to go to the vendor themselves and purchase it.

As I have noted numerous times, if you listen to vendors, everyone loves their system, they have retention rates in the plus 90%, yet, somehow the number one thing they hear is that people are looking for a new system, they are unhappy with their current system. If everyone is content with your system, and there are 450-500 vendors out there, then how is it, people are leaving? Virtually any vendor will do heavy customization for you – but there are additional costs to it.

Vendors in this space include Docebo, eFront, Litmos and of course Totara. Graphical progress bar – basically less text or funky icons that only the vendor knows what is – example, a recall one vendor using a floppy disk to represent an online course. Seems to focus more on client side server, when space as a whole is focused more on SaaS. Calendar – Love it here, but when you hover over the dates, shows a tiny box if an event is available.

How many of you have seen vendors respond to your questions? A: Virtually every LMS vendor out there in the marketplace provides these features. Congrats, you are probably looking at less than 10 (based on my LMS directory which contains 475 vendors). Custom domains – rather than have yourcompany.vendorname.com, some systems are now offering custom domains so that your learners see whatever name you create.com and remove the vendor name.

There is a growing list of vendors, including small/mid size that are adding talent management components that match the Big Dog systems. A couple of vendors have added HRIS modules. It is interesting to note, that many of the vendors are targeting the SMB space, especially the small size (less than 500 employees) market. What is nice is there are still a significant number of vendors who have not added it.

The standards – curriculum paths, reports, calendar, batch uploads, assign users to one group and they see X courses, while another group sees Y courses will appear in these systems, along with the most common features in any system. Charging you for a custom domain (thankfully the vendors who are offering domains are slowly pulling away from charging). Vendors pay to be included in this directory. This is why you see the LMS list which has more than 600 vendors. Speed is often not an issue from the vendor side of the house.

What always stuns me are vendors who state they know what their learners want, but in reality have no clue, because they themselves do not see the technology and its usage among the masses. While there are a couple of vendors out there who have incorporated e-mail that can go to outside to people, rather than just within the learning management product, the overall space isn’t doing it. Web conferencing vendors can establish themselves to expand beyond the meeting standard.

There are vendors who achieved a perfect score for Tier 3, and there are some now who have many Tier 4, just not all of them. At one time it was all – “on your own servers” or nothing. One of my favorites is browser check because while vendors say their systems are browser agnostic, I have found in many systems this not to be the case. That said, there were some hiccups and from an entire vendor wise (expo here) angle, some unique and some, uh. This year, I estimated a 55/60% e-learning, including some ILT vendors offering some type of e-learning component. . The problem though is that there is a crisis going on in the K-12 sector and it is tied in part to e-learning (with wins and losses) and LMS vendors who serve that sector. and K-12 LMS vendors (a chunk of them).
