Publishing Adobe Captivate Projects: SWF, HTML5, or Both?

The Logical Blog by IconLogic

by Kevin Siegel      If you attend our  Adobe Captivate Beginner class , you will learn how to publish projects as SWF (for desktop users) and HTML5 (for mobile users).      Publishing in Captivate takes your source content and outputs it into a format that can be consumed (viewed) by the learner. When trying to access SWF content, those learners will be met with a warning that SWFs are not supported. SWF and HTML5 versions.

What about all those old SWF files?

Adobe Captivate

I’ve seen several posts related to the SWF output and the lack of browser support or simply having issues playing them. I also have a number of projects that were published as SWF from old versions of Captivate. In many cases, all I have any longer is the final SWF. I utilize a small little SWF player that has, for me, worked very well – and the price is right (FREE)! The post What about all those old SWF files?

Articulate Storyline vs. Adobe Captivate

The Logical Blog by IconLogic

A recent LinkedIn post asked eLearning developers: which tool is best: Adobe Captivate or Articulate Storyline? As  As I read through the comments, I was struck by how many people insisted that Storyline was the better choice because it was easier to learn than Captivate because it was so much like Microsoft PowerPoint.   As someone who uses both Captivate and Storyline, I have to disagree with that recurring sentiment.   Captivate costs around $1,000.

Adobe Captivate 6: HTML5 At Last!

The Logical Blog by IconLogic

by Kevin Siegel    You've probably heard by now that Adobe released Adobe Captivate 6 late last week. Publishing in Captivate takes your source content and outputs it into a format that can be consumed (viewed) by the learner. Currently the most common way to publish a Captivate project is as a Flash SWF, an excellent solution because SWF files can be used by the vast majority of the world's personal computers, browsers and operating systems.

Adobe Captivate: Repurpose Preferences

Have you ever visited the Preferences dialog box in Adobe Captivate (Windows users, Edit > Preferences ; Mac users,  Adobe Captivate > Preferences ), made several changes and later, maybe months later, needed those settings on another computer running Captivate? Adobe Captivate 6: Scalable HTML Content

by Kevin Siegel    I've published a ton of eLearning lesson using Adobe Captivate, and I have seen the Publish dialog box more times than I can count. If you hadn't noticed the option in the lower right of the Captivate 6 Publish dialog box, join the crowd.  I was curious what the option would do, so I enabled it and published a SWF. Adobe Captivate: Internalize or Externalize?

The Logical Blog by IconLogic

The common way to publish a completed Captivate eLearning video is as a SWF (small web file). When the publish process is complete, you will end up with three files: an HTML file (which is what your learner will need to open the lesson in a web browser), a JavaScript file (called standard.js) and the SWF containing your lesson.  But it is possible to publish your Captivate video so that the Skin, Widgets, FMR's and Animations are split apart from the SWF.

Adobe Captivate 6: Delivering Standalone eLearning Lessons

Adobe Captivate 6: High Fidelity PowerPoint Imports

Adobe Captivate: Using Aggregator

The Logical Blog by IconLogic

In an ideal world, your Captivate projects would be kept to a respectable number of slides (fewer than approximately 100). If you publish your Captivate projects as SWFs, you can combine multiple SWF files into one lesson using the Aggregator. Once added to an Aggregator project, you can publish the combined files as a SWF, EXE file, PDF or HTML. The published Aggregator file will include a TOC using the names of the separate SWF files. by Kevin Siegel.

Creating Captivate Courses from Multiple Merged Microlearning Modules

In this blog, we’re going to address how to take the small modules of microlearning you’ve created and combine them into one amazing over-arching course using the tools provided in Captivate. NOTE: For the sake of consistency and ease, I’m going to use Captivate 2017 as my platform, but the concepts I’ll be discussing have been around for many previous versions of Captivate and the methods haven’t changed much. Adobe Captivate 5.5: Lowering the Size of Published SWFs

The Logical Blog by IconLogic

I often hear from Captivate developers who are required to output smaller and smaller SWFs, while making their lessons more and more interactive. Fortunately, adding interactivity to a lesson does not negatively impact the size of the published SWF. Rather, imported assets such as audio, video and images are the main culprits behind SWF bloat. There are some things that you can do while working in Captivate that may lower the size of the published SWF.

How to Merge Your Captivate Projects Into One Course

eLearning Brothers

Let’s discuss how to merge your Adobe Captivate course, or in other words, adding several courses into one mega awesome super-course! This idea is basically aggregating previously designed Captivate courses and adding them to the Table of Contents (TOC), so works as one course. Aggregating courses into one project in Captivate has several benefits for the learner: links to all or specific topics in the TOC. The TOC SWF files are the courses/topics of your choosing.
