The first software element that makes up a virtual world is a synchronous learning tool similar to WebEx or Adobe Connect or Saba’s Centra. Another important element of a metaverse is the social networking capability. Synchronous learning tools allow for real-time interaction on a computer among learners separated by great distances.

In a 3D world, the interaction with the students feels more intimate than with a 2-D distance learning application such as Centra, Horizon Wimba or Adobe Connect. We are relating as two people as opposed to disembodied names on a screen.

For example: in 2003, the low estimate for developing One Hour of Instructor-led, Web-based training delivery (using software such as Centra, Adobe Connect, or WebEx-two-way live audio with PowerPoint)was 30 hours and the high estimate was 80 hours. It is tough to stay on top of all the great stuff being offered out there, but the blogs and social media certainly help. Many of the blogs I follow are part of the eLearningLearning community. Getting mobile: Their Centra web conferencing system and performance applications are available for iPhone and iPad, with Android and Blackberry in the works. Embedded social collaboration throughout the modules. Social network analysis. So what are Saba up to with their latest software? The use of widgets, Outlook add-ins, etc.

A portfolio of learning assets was created, which included ‘above the line’ learning interventions (instructor-led classroom and online classroom) as well as ‘below the line’ (e-learning, email and phone support, with corporate social networking groups). This was accomplished using Bupa’s Saba Centra virtual classroom platform.
