Over the last year there has been quite a lot of change one way or another in terms of tools. Some tools have disappeared or died (eg gnolia), others have been acquired (eg Dimdim), some have changed their name (eg twine to evri), and some have changed focus and no longer offer what they once did.

The forward thinking folks at Dimdim created an application that is completely in the cloud. Dimdim has an open source version so developers can integrate it with other software. For example, there is a Moodle module for starting a Dimdim session directly from within Moodle. Edublogs Campus is hoping to change that.

DimDim - Still a little rough around the edges, but a great, free tool. In addition to the real-time editing described above, it also has notifications of changes to people who are collaborating on the document. The bottom line on most work teams is that you want to have a reliable notification of changes, discussion, etc.
