Due to the “internet of things,” Microsoft Office decided to kill off their Clipart library in December 2014. The Clipart library has been available within the PowerPoint and MS Word programs since the mid-1990s. Their clipart library usage has been in decline, as users gain more familiarity with search engines.

Did you know you can animate individual elements of your ClipArt, not just the entire image. Check out the cool effects you can do once you ungroup your ClipArt. Today I wanted to show you how you can ungroup clip art and add some animations for some cool effects. And what I did here is I did an appear effect.

Any instructional designer will tell you that they are always looking for ways to make their elearning more effective. Truth is, creating effective elearning can all be traced back to one thing: learner engagement. Black and white charts with various Clipart images aren’t going to do any favors with regards to attention span.

Editing Graphics to Draw Attention Tom Kuhlman wrote about not only ungrouping ClipArt elements in PowerPoint to create custom ClipArt, but also about using silhouettes to draw attention and convey meaning. Another way to draw attention to specific areas of graphics is to add a cartoon effect to parts of the image.

In the infancy of this industry it was not uncommon to sit through elearning modules that consisted entirely of Microsoft PowerPoint slides and perhaps some Clipart sprinkled throughout. The presentation in general is far more dynamic and effective. The learning management system would then track your attendance. That was it.

This tutorial does not give step-by-step instructions on using each of the effects in PowerPoint 2007 / 2010. In PowerPoint 2007 / 2010, choose Insert > Image > Clipart option to search for and choose a background image to add to a plain white slide. From the Effects gallery, choose a border. And I’ve seen courses that included voiceover narration but little (or no) text on the screen… just some very dated clipart. When it comes to effective eLearning, should there be more text on the screen? And now I’m in a panic trying to find a pause or rewind button. Should there be less text but more images?
