As for bold – remember, if everything is bold, then nothing is bold. Same rule applies to italics. Use only photos. But don't use silhouettes or any images of people that do not have faces.

Each slide is free so why cram it full? Do not use cartoonish clipart , what does it add (distraction). If you need an image to support a point, use real images, you can download many images from Microsoft's clipart page. Strictly limit the amount of text you place on each slide (and make what you do use big enough to read).

There are several sources for free images, but I usually start with Microsoft Office Clipart because the options are plentiful and the image vendor is tagged in the photo – in case I want to blow my entire $1.50

On the other end of the spectrum, we also didn’t want the unprofessional feel of using mismatched clipart. In my opinion, it matters less what style of image (realistic photos, clipart, etc) and more that the themes match throughout your course. For example, if you’re going to use clipart, that’s fine, but use the same style.
