We’ve all seen e-Learning that features endless stock photos of people in business environments, sitting at desks but not actually doing anything related to the job your learners are training for. Your image should be more than just generic clipart. Don’t fall into that trap! Does it attract your learners’ attention?

We've all spent hours in front of eLearning or PowerPoint presentations filled with dodgy clipart or stock photos. And therefore it was my job to come up with a solution that was going to delight our client and not eat into our margin. One of the biggest challenges when creating a course is finding relevant, high quality graphics.

Which is situated directly to some irrelevant clipart. It is our job as learning professionals to change people's perception of what online content can be. And it's your job to educate them. And who can blame them? We have been subjected to this type of online learning for the past 10 years, and before that on CD-ROM.

What if you also pinged learners proactively about things like upcoming courses of relevance to their job or additional resources when you saw that they did not perform well in a course or on a quiz (e.g., documents, discussion forums, subject matter experts available to help)? Do not use cartoonish clipart , what does it add (distraction). If you need an image to support a point, use real images, you can download many images from Microsoft's clipart page. Yes, they do make the job of creating diagrams and charts very simple BUT if you're slide deck is full of these they quickly lose their impact.

I think he's done a wonderful job pulling together what looks to be a very interesting conference. He has a wonderful background including being director of eLearning at Root Learning and working for Masie organizing events. He is now CEO of Vizthink - and is organizing and running VizThink '08.
