At the CLO Symposium, Karie Willyerd showed samples of how Sun Microsystems is preparing to greet the workforce of 2020. Sun is constructing a platform that makes the nuggets available; you can mine for them however you choose. Sun and ILA are developing what I call learnscapes. This is a group that learns from nano-nuggets.

The underlying concept is that organizations and their people are members of many different types of networks, for example, communities of practice, the company social network, and close-knit collaborative work teams. There’s nothing new under the sun. You need to optimize participation in all of them.

In a flattened learning system, there are fewer experts and more fellow learners on paths that may cross.

There’s nothing new under the sun. A dozen years ago, JSB described explicit knowledge (know-what, resides in books) and tacit knowledge (know-how, lives in people and their practices). Hence, the importance of communities of practice. The explicit stuff is the tip of an iceberg of knowledge that is primarily tacit.

Now, for those who are unfamiliar with the Reform Symposium, let me explain: It's a 72 hour live web based symposium that follows the sun. New and emerging embedded systems such as iBeacon might perform this kind of activity tracking, but might also be used to enhance communications across campus, and within communities of practice.
