I have reached something of a cross-roads in my career, and I wanted to document the process of this arrival. It has been a long and exciting journey so far, dotted with exciting projects, some wonderful clients, and a tremendous amount of learning. The age of Connectivism was truly upon us.

So here’s my list of things to avoid. Of course, when they’re done, do them right! There are other causes of performance problems in organizations besides skill gaps. One of the wrong ways to do courses is to get information from SMEs and present it to the learners (whether or not you add a knowledge test). And information without practice – applying it to problems in context – doesn’t lead to new skills. You should practice what you preach.

Little acts of acknowledgement like paying attention to them or thanking them for bringing up a point can do a lot to boost their confidence and increase their participation. Social learning is more of an abstract concept. Truth is, the best organizations play lesser emphasis on documenting every form of learning.
