At the Social Learning Centre I am going to be hosting a number of short online “programmes” about social media, social learning and social business. Rather the programmes will be hosted in dedicated group spaces on the Social Learning Centre (which is powered by a social and collaboration platform).

Defining Communities of Practice (CoP). It’s hard to define a Community of Practice, but I think a good start would be to quote a Tweet I recently saw from another MSLOC430 participant. As long as you’re changing your practice, you know you’re in a community of practice.

Two weeks ago Jane Hart wrote an article titled, Social Learning: to be or not to be? , in which Jane expresses her dislike of the term Social Learning (big S, big L). Jane claims that “Social Learning has come to refer exclusively to the use of social media in top-down, formal learning.” We’re not always social.

So one approach that I have been promoting is, instead of thinking of Formal and Informal Leaning as polar opposites, rather to think in terms of a Social Workplace Learning Continuum (as shown diagrammatically in the image on the right). But in order to support the full SWL Continuum, there are 5 points to take on board.

Anyhow, the book is very practical and has lots of good tips. The opportunities to expand community conversations and personal learning networks are huge with social media.

I have been writing about social learning and its related concepts – communities of practices , working out loud and skills for the networked world for quite some time now. The catch is that “social learning” cannot just be implemented or enforced. Social learning” cannot be assigned as one would a course or a module.

I am not the first to note that social learning is a confusion concept. I joined one Friday when the topic was about social learning. Any Twitterchat is hard work but it was worst to make sense here because I noticed that we all talked with a different view on social learning. That's one of the views but not mine.

How does this relate to social learning? Can introverts engage in social learning? It could be that introverted professionals prefer to go through individual e-learning models and more extroverted professionals in social learning activities. We have already concluded that everybody engages in social learning.

I manage my family, team, career, and social needs effortlessly. Social Learning Community. I launched the Social Learning Community on 7 March, and in the few weeks that it has been active, there are now over 550 members. We have had quite a few discussions, including what makes a successful community.
