MOOCs: Where We’ve Been, Where We Are, and Where We’re Headed

Your Training Edge

Several pundits and observers have noted that MOOCs are following the Gartner hype cycle for emerging technologies, and most agree that we are now somewhere between the “trough of disillusionment” and the “slope of enlightenment,” on our way to the “plateau of productivity.”. For these programs, MOOCs have the potential to deliver the necessary training effectively and at huge cost savings.

Context is King!

Breakthrough eLearning

I received an email invitation today to join a webinar to be led by Ed Cohen, the Chief Technology Officer of Plateau Systems, titled "The Future of Learning Content." It promised that I would "learn about the important trends that are shaping the development, deployment and management of learning content," and discover "how content can be more effectively purchased, deployed and managed" (presumably using Plateau's technology).

They’re still solid employees, but their growth has plateaued. According to Stanford psychologist Carol Dweck who coined the term, praise and reward structures based on this idea of talent can have a dampening effect on employees’ willingness to learn, innovate, and take risks. Keep your team informed on upcoming learning opportunities in your community or online, perhaps through a monthly internal newsletter or education-focused meeting.

Yes, I made up that word, but go with it.

My 2012 Enterprise mLearning Predictions Recap

mLearning Trends

The acceptance of mobile learning within the business community probably won’t happen with much fanfare, it will just happen and be accepted as a “norm” wherein the market no longer asks “should we offer learning to our employees (or partners or customers) via mobile device?” Part of this trend is less about the tablet being a better form factor than a smartphone but more about the tablet being a more practical and cost effective alternative to a standard issue laptop.

In fact, each of the “Four Horsemen” who rule the enterprise – namely SumTotal , Saba , Plateau & Geolearning – gave it a go in some way although no one outside their immediate customers or PR agencies seemed to notice. True, accessing mobile learning content via a device’s embedded web browser is an effective and useful delivery modality but the experience is generally watered down to what works at the lowest common denominator level. A.K.A.
