The Social Intranet Index is a metric that denotes the degree of social functionality afforded by an enterprise’s intranet. While these apps aren’t components of the enterprise’s intranet proper, they’re accessible from there and thus form part of the network. The corporate community pitches in to produce and maintain organic knowledge. Knowledge contained in silos is increasingly shared, and a broader community blossoms.

A few days ago my Internet Time Alliance colleague, Harold Jarche, shared this article, written by Deb Lavoy, with me: Social Business Doesn’t Mean What You Think It Does, Neither Does Enterprise 2.0. In other words those who think “social learning&# is just about a new training trend, or about adding social media into the &# blend&# , or that it is about acquiring the latest Social Learning Management System are missing the big picture.

Personal Knowledge Management. Enterprise 2.0, Common tools for diverse communities at Xerox Global Services. LearnTrends 2009 is going to be awesome. Yesterday I drew up the tentative agenda. Our theme is convergence in corporate learning. We aim to explore how to corral the loose pieces of learning technology, both on the web and off, in order to come up with a unified, targeted strategy for moving forward.

But there was another significant trend in the answers… Learning and Work Converge In a world where Knowledge Work and Learning is Inseparable , finding ways to support and improve work is the same as finding ways to support and improve learning. Jay Cross in Ten Years After puts it: In a knowledge society, learning is the work. Isn't that the definition of management. The main objective of the new training department is to enable knowledge to flow in the organization.

Knowledge work and learning to work smarter are becoming indistinguishable. Old-style training enraged many managers because it was separate from work. It needn’t be this way, particularly since knowledge work and learning are nearly indistinguishable. Knowledge workers create value in workscapes.
