This Week on #TalkTech: Apple Slows Innovation, PKM Not a Technology, and Digital Natives

Bottom-Line Performance

Topic 2: Personal Knowledge Management (PKM) is Not a Technology…so how do we help organizations learn informally? Harold Jarche, writer and consultant on social learning and PKM, often explains that informal learning is how we naturally learn and NOT a product that can be purchased. PKM is not a technology, an enterprise system, a piece of software, or a platform. If anyone is selling you a PKM system, they do not understand it.

Social Learning is Voluntary; Collaboration Platforms are Enablers

ID Reflections

I love this description from Jane Harts post: FAUXIAL LEARNING is about forcing people to use social media in courses – or even in the workplace – and then confusing compliance with engagement (and even worse) learning. As an Instructional Designer and L&D Consultant, I am often asked questions like: 1.What social collaboration platform should we use? Does this mean the employees are not engaging in "social learning"? Collaboration culture social learning

Sense-making with PKM. When he moved to consulting and didn’t have an IT department and those resources, he realized he had to do something different. PKM is a set of problem-solving skills for work, focused on getting things done but not necessarily task focused. A PKM Method. Other models for PKM. PKM is very much individualized process–we have to figure out how to make sense of things. How does PKM relate to L&D organizations?

Workplace Learning in a World “Beyond Automation”

Learnnovators

Increasingly the human workforce will have to take on the unstructured work that requires skills like judgement, decision making, pattern sensing, emotional intelligence, social intelligence, and more. The table below captures the shifts as I see it: I have been writing about social and collaborative learning, the importance of communities of practices and networked learning skills like building one’s PLN and PKM for some time now.

Social Learning Cannot Be A Bolt-On Strategy

Learnnovators

I recently wrote about the challenges of integrating social learning in the workplace. Even as I was mulling over the topic and browsing through Dion Hinchcliffe’s posts for insights on social business, I had a moment of epiphany. Social Learning and social business go hand in hand. To facilitate social learning, an organization has to become a social business first. A piecemeal approach to social learning will only serve to confound us further.

THE CHANGING FACE OF WORK AND WORKPLACE LEARNING

What will emerge is a network of diverse and connected workers skilled at PKM learning together to develop skills they can apply to their work. Social media and open resources like MOOCs will foster an era of self-driven learners who know what they need, where to find it and take their pick. As an L&D professional who is passionate about self-driven learning, #pkm and #pln, and believe in and evangelize social and informal learning, I realize it’s time to take a step back and do a reality check. It’s not the social media tools that are held under scrutiny and doubtfully examined.

It leverages the powers of networks and social platforms, and the affordances of mobile and cloud to build an interconnected and continuously learning organization. The affordances of ubiquitous connectivity, pervasive mobility and cloud, and the prevalence of social media ensure that organizations today are connected.

Re-imagining Work & Learning in a Networked World

ID Reflections

As technological capability increases, the cloud becomes pervasive, and the power of social and mobile become progressively evident, these will transform the way we function. How do we help organizations see that social and informal learning is not a new and fancy way to learn but an essential requirement in a complex, rapidly changing, and uber connected world? Technology with the characteristics of social , mobile , and personal are already changing user behaviour.

L&D's New Hatrack

ID Reflections

An increasingly global and uber connected workforce, globally distributed organizations, dispersed expertise, ubiquitous connectivity powered by the affordances of social, local and mobile (SoLoMo) and the economy of individuals are giving rise to completely different working and learning behaviors. Today’s users with their mobile devices, anytime anywhere access to the internet, and connected to their networks via social platforms operate under completely different paradigms.

Uberizing Organizational Learning – Thinking Beyond Courses

ID Reflections

L&D’s focus needs to shift from designing one-size fits all courses to consulting with individual learners, their managers and HR, and carving out learning roadmaps for them. L&D needs to don the curator’s hat – a critical 21 st Century skill – that requires an ability to seek, sense and share ( Harold Jarche’s PKM model ) relevant content for a defined target audience. Designing courses is passé!

Looking Back On 2015

Nick Leffler

Social Learning Has Never Been About a Single Tool — The original article I had written this about has since been moved/removed/retired (not sure which one) but it was rightfully done because it was off on pretty much everything. I do know it talked about social learning being a flop (but in what regard that gets a bit murky). Social learning can’t flop, in fact it can only make a bigger come back because it’s always been the way humans learn.

Demystifying Working Out Loud

Learnnovators

It has helped me to develop my personal learning network (PLN) and enabled my PKM. What working out loud requires is for us to collectively go back to the days when we swapped stories sitting around a fire, the only difference being that the fire has been replaced by a participative medium like a social collaboration platform, communities of diverse individuals and a global mindshare.
