Wikis and Learning – 60 Resources

Tony Karrer

I’m involved in several discussions around how to use Wikis as part of learning solutions. So, of course, I went to eLearning Learning and I looked at Wiki , Collaborative Learning with Wikis , Wikis and eLearning 2.0 , Wikis Corporate eLearning , Social Learning with Wikis , Wiki Security and a few others. Here’s some of what I found: Why a Wiki?

Open Source eLearning Tools

Tony Karrer

I was just asked about trends in open source for eLearning and particularly open source eLearning tools. You can find a long list of tools broken into authoring tools, games/simulations, quiz/test tools, social media, delivery platforms, tracking and whether they support mobile. Beyond that, probably the best thing to do is to use eLearning Learning to go through it’s open source eLearning and open source eLearning Tools.

Examples of eLearning 2.0

During my presentation last Thursday that was an introduction to eLearning 2.0 as part of an online event for the eLearningGuild, I mentioned a few common ways that I've seen eLearning 2.0 internal processes on wiki starting to use wikis internally Moving faculty bookmarks to Delicious use wiki for learners to craft definition of 'seamless service' after searching orgs that proclaim to provide seamless service We hope to build wikis that our students can use to share information.

Learning Organizations, eLearning 2.0 and Edupunk

Tony Karrer

Janet juxtaposes the recent inclusion of eLearning 2.0 type tools in Learning Management Systems against the philosophy that corporate and commercial is evil of the edupunkers. The questions she raises are: Is the edupunk ideology saying that the use of social media in commercial learning management systems is an assault on the very philosophy of learning 2.0? For Wiki-like capabilities, it likely is fine for an LMS to provide these and for learning organizations to use them.

MOOCs and Performance Support

Your Training Edge

The entire corporate and workplace training landscape is shifting. Performance support can take many forms: the quintessential types are checklists and other job aids, but in its broadest definition, performance support can include apps, YouTube videos, wikis and other knowledge bases, and even other people. Massive open online courses (MOOCs), which are the rising stars of the corporate training world, provide the perfect opportunity for businesses to do exactly that.

I've read a bit from ( here , here , and here ) about Jet Blue's use of web 2.0 / social media tools to communicate between their staff of learning professionals. This is another great example of eLearning 2.0. The Awareness platform includes tools such as blogs, wikis and social bookmarking / tagging. This allows faculty to get to know each other socially in order to be more effective sharing and working together later.

for Marketing – Social Learning Experience The concept is probably easiest to understand by considering what HP did around their course on Web 2.0 You can find more on this by going to the LearnTrends – SharePoint in Corporate Learning Recordings. The L&D organization created a social learning experience that brought together 60 marketing professionals from across the organization. A wiki that served as a repository for the resources they collected.

Obsidian Learning

In the following table, you’ll see elements of the Wiki definition, accompanied by Obsidian Learning’s breakdown. The term is used in eLearning and related fields in the sense of learning processes in mediated environments. However, the growing focus on microlearning activities can be seen by web users’ activities on the subject, who tag their corresponding weblog postings and social bookmarks with the term “microlearning.”.
