Low Cost LMS - Help Needed

Tony Karrer

I received an inquiry about the need for a low cost LMS solution and I've not had time to help this person with answers. We have roughly 500 learners and would use the LMS for mainly tracking and registration of ILT courses, communication (possibly through message boards), and posting of class materials. Also, my guess is that looking at License costs is probably a bad idea here since quite often there are services, hosting, etc. costs that can exceed license costs.

The ILT classes pick up from where the eLearning courses left off by covering more advanced topics and providing the opportunity to discuss unique situations. The eLearning classes will help the learners to gain pre requisite knowledge while the ILT course will help them achieve fluency in the program. A major benefit of the ILT class is that it will provide what the eLearning was missing by covering the "what if" situations.

Proving ROI in Training

By doing that I could easily point to the salary of the trainer and the cost of paying our employees to leave the store and sit through training. I'm sure the cost of eLearning would pale in comparison to rolling out an instructor led course.

It is true that the rapid e-learning development methodology leverages existing instructor-led training (ILT) content such as PowerPoint presentations to create online courses. Developers of online courses need to address this shortcoming when they convert PPT files, used in ILT sessions, to online courses. We thus see that rapid e-learning enables companies to develop good online courses fast, at low cost.

Part III : Where Are You with Your Blended Learning Strategy?

Before the spread of the internet in the early 2000s, there was the essential blend of instructor-led (ILT) training and self-paced “training in a box.” Along came the internet and duplication, packaging and shipping costs gave way to low-cost digital delivery on the internet. For many companies developing simple “page-turner” eLearning courses, the loss of Flash and the addition of authoring tools only lowered costs and shortened development time.

It seems to be pitching in two directions - it wants to be a site used by consumers ("create a course on flyfishing") and they want it to be a low-cost training system for businesses, albeit under a slightly different brand, "the Foundry". Facing restrictions like that it's inevitable that at least some of the education programmes will do the same as the corporate sector and look to elearning as a potentially low-cost alternative.

Talented Learning

It can manage elearning, ILT, dozens of languages, social integration, gamification, virtual classrooms and ecommerce. Docebo offers a low-cost option, but it tightens breadth and depth of functionality at this level. That translates into higher total cost of ownership (TCO). Docebo offers an enterprise solution for midsize to large organizations so they can cost-effectively implement a scalable LMS solution that adapts to their unique business needs.

If you’re getting a new one, now or in the future, consider features, cost, and the number of licenses.

Top Tech-Based Ways to Train a Distributed Workforce

The Learning Dispatch

It isn’t uncommon for offices to be spread across the country (or even the globe) as companies try to place their employees in the most cost-effective locations, or expand their talent pool outside the home office. Training a distributed workforce can be especially taxing for an L&D office if they are using an instructor-led training (ILT) model. Many of these tools are free or extremely low cost, depending on your needs.

Does not mean games nor the ILT approach of gamification. or LMSs that are low, low cost are selling “As Is” – so no discount. Thus, if you have buying a system that costs $300 a month for whatever user base that covers, do not expect any type of a discount. They (vendor) knows the likelihood that you will bolt after one year is quite low. You are not and they should not be in the “cost of living” business.

If you are still a huge fan of ILT or believe a blended learning approach is necessary, why stick only to PowerPoint, handouts and long talks? Costs and quality will vary. For vendors creating standalone apps for the masses on a variety of offerings or new product lines, costs will need to be significantly lower, otherwise it will not be successful. Costs will vary, again lower price points are needed. Low cost.

Surprised at the low number of LMS vendors here. I was surprised at the number of vendors offering a blended product – with ILT as more of the focus then their WBT counterpart. While there were some things that made me think, uh oh, for the most part it has potential – especially in the education/academia space – for the online components, not ILT. I know why people love Yammer, but its fee based product is not super low cost.
