APIs and Mashups r ur new ABCs for E-Learning

eLearning 24-7

Unfortunately, too many vendors in the e-learning space have failed to see the power and potential of this capability, and have decided to ignore them. However there are vendors who sell their API solution wrapped in a piece of software. Mashups. LMS Vendors.

State of the LMS 2012

eLearning 24-7

The data shows that what many vendors assume end users want is far from accurate. Too many vendors are focusing on talent/performance management as the next feature/component in their systems. By the mid to late 2000′s, the split returned with LCMS and LMS (and yes, there were vendors who called themselves LCMSs for as long as e-learning – online learning – has existed). rather then going through the LMS vendor.

What’s hurting the LMS market

eLearning 24-7

Revenues across the board are up, profit margins are healthy and competition is on-going (always a good thing). Make no mistake, there are plenty of vendors out there who believe in the concept of focusing on features and forgetting about usability, under the guise that people would rather have lots of cool blinky things rather than usability. There are a plethora of vendors out there, with blinders on. . Yet, many vendors are doing exactly that.

I mean ever&# , from a senior executive at a mid to large size vendor that has been in the market for several years. Across the board, a large number of vendors (from small to large) saw increases in their quarter numbers. Especially, when vendors released their 2010 final numbers and saw big increases from the previous year. One vendor is months behind their release schedule. Another vendor is suffering Q/A issues. In my latest directory, 393 LMS vendors – global, of which 34 or so are open source systems. In a market this size, and with so many vendors overly focused on the U.S. and not necessarily worldwide (which should be the case), there is bound to be those vendors who are seeking new opportunities. Folding up shop and switching to a new market: Talent/Performance Management, new product lines not tied to e-learning, services.

What I like about conferences is the ability to see the latest products and hear the pitches from the vendors. Yet, for all that do it, their are equal number of vendors who do not. Vendors who do not have anyone in their booth, during expo times – I see this at all shows, regardless of the product or market; but at e-learning/training shows you see it a lot OR you see them eating in their booth. I’ve heard it from vendors. Many consumers, I surmise are doing it already without even realizing it, and even some vendors are too. Preferably on/off synch, but as I mentioned in my LinkedIn mini-post, most learning system vendors still are not on/off synch with said mobile app. The majority of vendors have two mobile apps – one for iOS and one for Android (and yes, it is easy to say one mobile app with two different OS versions).

This post is for vendors, developers and implementers of the Experience API and for anyone who may one day create something with xAPI. I’m going to ask you as vendors, entrepreneurs, developers, designers from all around the world to provide me with your counsel as I ultimately must direct the effort. Consider Breaking Up the Spec Into Separate Standards Efforts. I personally lean on the side of breaking up the spec into three standards.

E-Learning Jargon: What you might think it is.well…

The spin is that you can accrue points by reading an article, taking a course, leaving comments, ranking content, completing an assessment and so on – varies among vendors. Hence some vendors might pitch “gaming elements”, but there is no way – the point above – is what the rest of the world sees as gaming elements. For some reason a lot of vendors, erroreously assume that modules is widely used – it isn’t.

2011 LMS Award Winners plus a quick note on m-learning

What has been applying is the term mobile learning and how it it pitched to consumers in the e-learning sector, especially with LMS/LCMS/Learning platform vendors. A few systems pitch that they have full mobile learning capability, especially with the iPad including the angle that you can see it full screen rather than the standard universal look – which shows up similar to the smartphone look – i.e. small. It shows up in your browser. Accepts APIs and Mashups.

Encore – Moodle: Pros, Challenges

The new article on a side note: focuses on emerging technology, but with a twist – something vendors in any e-learning space should be doing or exploring, but have not yet. APIs and mashups – which is really can expand Moodle to the next level of learning. So tweaks with code with the third party vendors/developers – tied to your system still applies. You still have to purchase seats for that content and that will cost.

LMS/LCMS Puzzlers

eLearning 24-7

Just some thoughts that puzzle me on why some LMS/LCMS vendors (okay over 98% of them) are still in some time warp from the Eighties when it comes time to enhance their services and technological solutions. So why do vendors refuse to do this? That said, I should be able, or my administrator should be able to call your tech support or customer service, depending on the issue (tech or non-tech) and get an answer – otherwise, why should you as the vendor have those staffs?

ARTICULATE NON EST REX – 3 REASONS HIGHER ORDER LEARNING IS BEYOND THE MOAT

Wonderful Brain

What I call ‘low-level’ elearning is the product of 3 conditions; the desire to move content to delivery as fast as possible, using the most basic software tools from which this can be accomplished, and lastly if something important is being tee’d up online but the development tool isn’t up to the task, the organization puts up fierce resistance to deliver learning in a different medium.

LMSs that kick ass: Mzinga

Janet Clarey

Mzinga believes that while traditional web-based training and eLearning courses have provided great ROI and cost reduction, they lack the social aspect of learning—the diversity in perspective, the insights, and the real-world stories and sharing that have always happened in a classroom. A: Dave Wilkins - We’re at the beginning of a schism in the LMS space—many vendors are moving their LMS to be part of a larger Talent Management vision. It’s Friday yay!
