Adobe Flash technology has helped support the delivery of online multimedia content for nearly two decades. Three popular eLearning formats are also largely dependent on Flash technology for their delivery medium: SCORM, Tin Can (xAPI), and video. Flash will be allowed to die in 2020 as Adobe ceases to support the standard.

There are also other standards like xapi, also known as an experience api (tin can api), cmi5 and AICC for advanced capabilities. Once the LMS does not have enough of the courseware to run through its own process, it utilizes a secure communication protocol called RTCC or Run-time Communication Coupling, ensuring cybersecurity.

One area where these tools will continue to invest in will be HTML5 and mobile responsive output. The good news with HTML5 which is a fast emerging standard for interactivity is that it is much easier to make it accessible. The catch though is that not all browsers support the accessibility constructs in HTML5.

I think we will see more thinking emerge about how the Experience API (xAPI or Tin Can) can enable informal learning, and how things like impromptu search-based study, so much a part of our lives, can be connected to a learning record store. HTML5 is in.

From HTML5 to Tin Can/Experience API, there’s certainly some change and growth happening right now on the tech side of e-Learning. Eric: Just recently we’ve started to see more authoring tools with the ability to publish to HTML5, a necessity for creating responsive courses.
