This one trend really is an irritation to me, because the term “training” is showing up rather than “learning”, which is the standard term as it relates to online learning (see it already?). Q : I am curious on why Cornerstone On Demand, Saba and SumTotal do not appear in your top twenty lists even though they appear on other sites as the best products in the market. Every e-learning consulting/research firm, etc. My latest take on those three vendors (plus one) are: Cornerstone On Demand – I have seen the new UI and I like what I saw. That said, they are in my top 40 for learning/extended enterprise cloud. There is nothing like interaction.

If the system offers a robust customization front, then expect implementation time to be aligned to systems that cost more – i.e. depends on what is needed to be done and specs. I am still surprised on how vendors who are offering assessment only tools are staying in the game. This will become one of the biggest features in 2012 – especially with people wanting to create simulations without being an e-learning developer. Some vendors push heavily on PPT, implying that a great WBT is really a PPT converted to Flash. Listen, Authorware is dead, so why create a product that is trying to bring it back to life with your own product?

Nice selection of vendors – in general. More goodies then in the past, but the vendor with the awesome monkeys – it was nearly impossible to get one – you had a better chance of allowing them to stick leeches on you, then getting one – what’s the point of marketing – if the product you want to show – yours – isn’t walking the floor with folks. Less vendors scanning people’s ID badges, which I found interesting.

The buzz, hype, demos, salespeople, awful expensive food, hotels that overcharge (I always find better deals on Expedia or sign up for the hotel’s e-mail newsletter) and yes, sometimes beyond awful seminars. The first segment is for buyers, potential and current customers. The second segment is for vendors – including insight from fellow vendors on various trade shows. The expo app often contains vendors who list absolutely nothing but their name.

Not so much, from what I saw – some of the tools were underwhelming (granted some were quite impressive), but rather how the vendors themselves perceived where the market is going and what customers want in their authoring tools.
