For whatever reason- okay to try to set themselves apart – some vendors have created the term “training management” Honestly, they could call it “online authoring system with a few reports and no frills” and it would be the same thing. Why do some vendors have trials and others do not?

What about a payment gateway – does the LMS vendor assist you with this or do you have to find your own? Do they have any reports dedicated for the e-commerce functionality? These are reports that are created by you, based on filters that you set, and are different than canned reports (come pre-set in the system).

LMS vendors are continuing to add some very unique features in an effort to set themselves apart from the competition. Desktop sharing (appears with a few vendors). DVD to video conversion for creating courses. Section 508 (still shocking at the lack of vendors that fail to offer this feature). Guess what some vendors do.

Never assume that they know the terminology in the industry, nor assume that what you think one term means, doesn’t necessarily mean what the vendor thinks it means. In the Enterprise and Large Enterprise it is not uncommon to get pricing that is quite high, especially if the vendor knows procurement is involved.

Some vendors (and it is gaining steam) offer “active users” Active users – People who are taking at least one course during the month. There are a few vendors who will charge only when the end user completes a course (but this is rare). E-Commerce model – It is rare, but there are vendors who offer it.
