Cammy Beans Learning Visions: Best Practices for Software Training?

Learning Visions

Ive been involved in I dont know how many training modules, ranging from the overly long to the shorter chunked variety. Remember, all I do is online, self-paced eLearning). What have you been doing in the software training world of late? Cammy, thanks for doing this! Help learners see the model, show some examples of how the model explains the steps, then have them perform some tasks by predicting, from the model, how to do things. United States License.

Clive says, "I must confess I dont really care how someone has acquired their knowledge of the subject, but I do care whether they are constantly striving to do a better job." Besides, he told me, I didnt have a degree in ID, so obviously I didnt know anything.

Effective design using PPT as a tool. Can do an awful lot with PPT. It’s very easy to load content on slides – but it takes more creativity to move learner to actual understanding! Use scenarios – apply what you know to make a decision.Ask the learner to take info that’s not clearcut and apply it using a question (in PPT – picture of a farmer and 3 images of “experts&# to ask for advice. The State of Instructional Design

Tom Spiglanin

The challenge now is how best to do this when, at the same time, employees are also nearly always working as work and life become fused. Perhaps it’s tempting to blame the design process for failing to produce effective solutions, but I would disagree. If only designing an optimal solution for the workplace were as simple as knowing every possible alternative for a given knowledge need or performance gap and then choosing the best blend of approaches. Just do it.

Perspective Matters

Tom Spiglanin

When you look in the mirror, what do you see? Only through scientific observation and analysis do we know otherwise. While different training departments serve a variety of customers, they all share common attributes: they have a population of workers who use their products and services, a smaller population of managers who look to training to address performance and knowledge gaps, and sponsors who fund the training departments. Cammy Beans Learning Visions: Debunking the Learning Styles Myth

Learning Visions

Wednesday, May 16, 2007 Debunking the Learning Styles Myth As you may know, Ive been on a focused mission to better understand so-called learning styles and their place -- or not -- in e-Learning. It is probably more accurate that such instruction is effective because the multiple illustrations induce learners to devote more time to these concepts. I prefer to get the big picture view first, and often a diagram or metaphor will do that for me. United States License.

Do you use audio on every slide because the client says people will think its broken if you dont? Weve taken this up before and many of us IDs know the strategies for using audio most effectively by now. We know to avoid narrating text word for word, for instance. You do know that, right?) Do Americans just like to talk way too much? Do I hear India? and what can we do now that we have digital voices that we couldnt do so well before?

Cammy Beans Learning Visions: Visual and Auditory Multi-Tasking

Learning Visions

Monday, June 18, 2007 Visual and Auditory Multi-Tasking From the Eide Neurolearning Blog: Voluntary Control of Attention - Visual and Auditory Multi-Tasking There is a yin and yang effect between visual and auditory attention. Mixed visual-auditory stimuli have an underadditive effect, so that if you have to do both at the same time, total brain activation goes down. Maybe the "underadditive effect" occurs when a multimedia presentation does all the thinking for you.

Cammy Beans Learning Visions: Audio in eLearning: When Rough Around the Edges is Better

Learning Visions

Tuesday, June 09, 2009 Audio in eLearning: When Rough Around the Edges is Better At our seminar today on using Articulate and Moodle and "Doing More for Less" , the conversation turned (as it always does) to using audio in eLearning. My argument is that if the information is presented as 'real' conversation it is more believable, more engaging and ultimately more effective. This past year we started doing more video interviews with SMEs using Flip cameras over the XL1.

Where is the road map?

Learning with e's

No matter how much successive governments pontificate on 'the way ahead' and no matter how much (or how little) money they throw at the problem, the fact is - we are standing still, because no one really knows where we are going. Anyone who claims they know the way forward is either deluded, or lying. Yet we do know this: Education needs reform, because far too many young people are being let down by the current system. Conflict resolution

Learning with 'e's

The theory American psychologist Leon Festinger was interested in the conflict that we experience when our beliefs or values do not coincide with other values and beliefs. In effect, says Festinger, we seek to reduce our dissonance through attempting to rationalise our thoughts and beliefs and those with which they conflict. Indeed, problem based learning is thought to be one of the most effective situated learning methods. Unported License.

This is definitely a gap and I intend to start having this conversation going forward. If they dont do anything, find out why. At my company, we use SVN for version control (at a basic level I know that its a tool that allows you to check files in and out and keeps track of versions, etc.). And, I would assume, that off-the-shelf vendors have some type of versioning control in place to ensure that customers know which versions were accessed by which people and when.

He suggests a list of potential outcomes with check boxes , effectively allowing the learner to create his or her own objectives. Personally, I dont like to hide things from learners and play guessing games, so I am an advocate of letting the learner know, up front, what they will be expected to do at the conclusion of the course, lesson, or whatever. There are better ways to do some of the things we’ve been doing. How do you try to think like a learner?

New ideas in a digital age

Learning with 'e's

Before the digital age, we had mass media to do the job - TV, radio and newspapers and prior to that, more primitive technologies were employed to spread news. An interesting feature of the model is a gap or chasm between the early adopters and the early majority, which has been referred to as the 'bowling alley'. Cammy Beans Learning Visions: Learning Styles

Learning Visions

Theories do not help us to expand our awareness and understanding of learning; they serve to reduce and confine it. The idea of learning styles commonly refers to some notion for a preferred way of learning. I can see how theorists might argue that reading text aloud to the learner addresses multiple "learning styles," but the real-world experience is one of frustration: you want to read ahead but you cant because the narrator reads more slowly than you do.
