Cammy Beans Learning Visions: Brent Schlenker: Marketers and Game Developers Know More About Learning Than We Do!

Learning Visions

Tuesday, September 22, 2009 Brent Schlenker: Marketers and Game Developers Know More About Learning Than We Do! Live session with Brent Schlenker: Marketers and Game Developers Know More About Learning Than We Do! How do we use new and emerging technologies in the learning space? Point of today’s conversation: talking training, design and development if a marketing person were doing it. That’s where most creative talent in organizations go.

The State of Instructional Design

Tom Spiglanin

The challenge now is how best to do this when, at the same time, employees are also nearly always working as work and life become fused. Perhaps it’s tempting to blame the design process for failing to produce effective solutions, but I would disagree. Just do it.

Cammy Beans Learning Visions: Best Practices for Software Training?

Learning Visions

Ive been involved in I dont know how many training modules, ranging from the overly long to the shorter chunked variety. Remember, all I do is online, self-paced eLearning). The next project Im about to take on is going to be more of a just-in-time performance support tool.

Cammy Beans Learning Visions: Do Instructional Design Degrees Get "Wasted"?

Friday, January 30, 2009 Do Instructional Design Degrees Get "Wasted"? Is the degreed-ID the department manager and not doing any actual design work? You need to know how to work with other groups and meet their needs." As such, Ive seen the manager able to champion ideas and standards much more effectively than if there was a lack of degree or experience. And lord knows that the battalions of MBAs in the financial industry havent heaped up laurels lately.)

Cammy Beans Learning Visions: Instructional Designers: Do You Have a Degree in ID?

Learning Visions

Friday, November 02, 2007 Instructional Designers: Do You Have a Degree in ID? If youre working as an instructional designer, do you have an advanced degree? What do you think counts more? Clive says, "I must confess I dont really care how someone has acquired their knowledge of the subject, but I do care whether they are constantly striving to do a better job." Besides, he told me, I didnt have a degree in ID, so obviously I didnt know anything.

Effective design using PPT as a tool. Can do an awful lot with PPT. It’s very easy to load content on slides – but it takes more creativity to move learner to actual understanding! Use scenarios – apply what you know to make a decision.Ask the learner to take info that’s not clearcut and apply it using a question (in PPT – picture of a farmer and 3 images of “experts&# to ask for advice. Whose advice do you follow?)

Perspective Matters

Tom Spiglanin

When you look in the mirror, what do you see? Only through scientific observation and analysis do we know otherwise. All too often we respond with any metrics we think might help, even when we know they have little to do with the efficacy of training.

Cammy Beans Learning Visions: Getting Started in Instructional Design

Learning Visions

Ill share with you what I know and point you in the direction of some great resources where you can learn even more. For me, instructional design is about designing "engaging and effective" asynchronous learning experiences (web-based training programs). Ive always had the good fortune to have a team of graphic designers and programmers who do that heavy lifting. Oh and I saw your post about telling other moms what you do. The eLearning Salary Gender Gap Phew!

Cammy Beans Learning Visions: Audio in eLearning: Cultural Differences?

Learning Visions

Do you use audio on every slide because the client says people will think its broken if you dont? Weve taken this up before and many of us IDs know the strategies for using audio most effectively by now. We know to avoid narrating text word for word, for instance.

Cammy Beans Learning Visions: Instructional Strategies?

Learning Visions

What instructional strategies do you use to make your content more memorable and engaging? Do you ever develop a mnemonic for a custom course? I dont know if Ive ever done that. Things might get a bit silly with all that snapping, but I bet its effective. Let me know.

Cammy Beans Learning Visions: Debunking the Learning Styles Myth

Learning Visions

Wednesday, May 16, 2007 Debunking the Learning Styles Myth As you may know, Ive been on a focused mission to better understand so-called learning styles and their place -- or not -- in e-Learning. Came across this post on Guy Wallaces Pursing Performance Blog, Debunking the Myth -- There Is No Such Thing as "Learning Styles". It is probably more accurate that such instruction is effective because the multiple illustrations induce learners to devote more time to these concepts.

Cammy Beans Learning Visions: Visual and Auditory Multi-Tasking

Learning Visions

Monday, June 18, 2007 Visual and Auditory Multi-Tasking From the Eide Neurolearning Blog: Voluntary Control of Attention - Visual and Auditory Multi-Tasking There is a yin and yang effect between visual and auditory attention. Mixed visual-auditory stimuli have an underadditive effect, so that if you have to do both at the same time, total brain activation goes down. Maybe the "underadditive effect" occurs when a multimedia presentation does all the thinking for you.

Cammy Beans Learning Visions: Audio in eLearning: When Rough Around the Edges is Better

Learning Visions

Tuesday, June 09, 2009 Audio in eLearning: When Rough Around the Edges is Better At our seminar today on using Articulate and Moodle and "Doing More for Less" , the conversation turned (as it always does) to using audio in eLearning. My argument is that if the information is presented as 'real' conversation it is more believable, more engaging and ultimately more effective. This past year we started doing more video interviews with SMEs using Flip cameras over the XL1.

No matter how much successive governments pontificate on 'the way ahead' and no matter how much (or how little) money they throw at the problem, the fact is - we are standing still, because no one really knows where we are going. Warning - this is a rant.

Then put the other information into references, performance support and follow-up courses. ( Well designed training should include performance support. We know the learner is going to forget, so make sure theyll have access to the information they need when they need it. Cammy Beans Learning Visions: e-Learning Content & Version Control

This is definitely a gap and I intend to start having this conversation going forward. If they dont do anything, find out why. At my company, we use SVN for version control (at a basic level I know that its a tool that allows you to check files in and out and keeps track of versions, etc.). And, I would assume, that off-the-shelf vendors have some type of versioning control in place to ensure that customers know which versions were accessed by which people and when.
