Mind the gap!

Learning with 'e's

Instead, let me say that the ''listening but not hearing'' problem is just one of the ''gaps'' teachers and students experience just about every day in education - chasms and transactional distances that can open up between intentions of one person and misrepresentations of another. In online/digital learning environments, my own research has shown that the gap can be amplified or reduced, depending on a) the skill of the teacher b) their attitude and c) how the technology is being used.

Minding the gap

Learning with 'e's

This is one of the many evocative images from BETT 2016. The image was posted on Twitter by Lars Henriksen (aka @lektoren) based on a tweet from @serhatgurgun and I think it captures one of the most important messages to emerge from the event. The slogan 'Mind the gap between educational technology and technology in education' can be translated as: technology should be used with pedagogical purpose and should never be used just for the sake of it.

Obama’s Going to Close the Skills Gap. But Does It Even Exist?

So what could possibly be the trouble with more retraining to close the ‘skills gap’? Skills Gap, What Skills Gap? Nobel laureate and New York Times columnist Paul Krugman has long led the charge of those asserting the skills gap is mostly fictional. How to Find, and Embrace, Your Company’s Hidden Experts

Where is the road map?

Learning with e's

No matter how much successive governments pontificate on 'the way ahead' and no matter how much (or how little) money they throw at the problem, the fact is - we are standing still, because no one really knows where we are going. Anyone who claims they know the way forward is either deluded, or lying. Yet we do know this: Education needs reform, because far too many young people are being let down by the current system. Top Five Tips for Creating Training Quizzes

Mindflash

We know that quizzes play an important role in workplace training, helping people clarify, pull out, and retain important bits of information, and of course assessing their grasp of the material, as well. Training Lessons from Seinfeld, Lesson 3: Do the Opposite. Pre-training knowledge-check exercises or quizzes pique trainees’ interest, and help identify knowledge gaps, which can in turn motivate trainees to pay closer attention.

We know what is coming next, we can control it, and it doesn't tax our minds that much. But for today's schools and universities, where we should be trying to 'draw out from within', surely order and predictability run counter to creative learning and self-driven critical enquiry. Yet we can do so much more by encouraging students to question for themselves. Do we need anarchy in the school system? Image source by Christopher Hubenthal Light the blue touch paper.

It goes to show, weve got to make sure that were putting the right content into our courses -- so that the learner knows that he or she is actually going to be using this information later.

New ideas in a digital age

Learning with 'e's

Before the digital age, we had mass media to do the job - TV, radio and newspapers and prior to that, more primitive technologies were employed to spread news. An interesting feature of the model is a gap or chasm between the early adopters and the early majority, which has been referred to as the 'bowling alley'. Image source In the digital age however, many have questioned whether Rogers' model still has any traction. How are new ideas spread through society?

Cammy Beans Learning Visions: Learning Styles

Learning Visions

Theories do not help us to expand our awareness and understanding of learning; they serve to reduce and confine it. The idea of learning styles commonly refers to some notion for a preferred way of learning. I can see how theorists might argue that reading text aloud to the learner addresses multiple "learning styles," but the real-world experience is one of frustration: you want to read ahead but you cant because the narrator reads more slowly than you do.
