We got on just fine because we discovered that we have a lot in common, not least of which was that we both did formal training as photographers, in the pre- digital age. It was a huge sense of achievement, and I had been involved at every step of the creative process, from start to finish. Whichever way we learn, whether it is photography, or some other skill, being involved in the creative process retains its magic and is hugely important for the learning experience.

You can crop them to your preferred size and add text or filters with your preferred photo editor. Flickr allows its users to grant Creative Commons licenses to their photos and as a result many of these images can be available for YOUR use! There are different types of Creative Commons licenses and Flickr breaks them down for you and categorizes its database of photos accordingly. Check it out Flickr's Creative Commons page here. They aim to be a community for designers, developers, photographers and other media publishers who want better, easier access to license-specific media on the web. Obviously, this approach doesn’t work for everyone and taking good photos is an art in itself. However, when you get into the office to edit the photo you see that the image is a little out of focus. I had a friend who would always use the lowest settings on his digital camera because he wanted to have room for as many photos as possible. He had room for something like 5000 photos. Share your photos. Why not share your photos?

In learning and development, and instructional and graphics design, it can be tempting to use such resources to demonstrate a procedure (YouTube video), illustrate a point (funny photo/meme), or simply improve the auditory and/or visual presentation of your content (sound effects/cool graphics). The most common is the Standard YouTube License, which basically allows YouTube to broadcast the video, with the creator retaining the copyright. Photos and Graphics.

The strong visual style has been augmented by photos of elite athletes in action. These photos are all open licensed Creative Commons images. In fact I’ve used Creative Commons images, videos and audio throughout the course. These are Open Educational Resources (OERs) and both the course and its accompanying textbook titled Secrets of Asian Sport Psychology are also licensed through Creative Commons as OERs.

I know I have written about free photo repositories before ( here and here ). It’s an image library of arts, history and science that is mainly focused on licensing images for use in education ( your ears should perk up now ) and for commercial use. On the education side, a careful read of the license shows that for most applications usage is free of cost. The usual credit-line requirement is there; much like a Creative Commons-type license.

In recent years, there has been a huge surge of free stock image sites that offer photos, vector graphics, and even videos!
