In the social media age, sharing and repurposing are common place. This raises a number of tensions around creativity, intellectual property and copyright. Creative Commons (CC) is a copyright management system that goes a long way to addressing these issues. Creative Commons licences can enable teachers everywhere to access content and share their ideas freely.

I Believe that Learning is Inherently Social

It may have been done alone or with others, but the social connection was still strong: teachers directed and facilitated the learning, and we often shared answers or talked about homework with peers. This is not to say that everything we know or can do was learned socially. But then, learning is an inherently social activity. The classroom experience itself is social, bringing together students who want to learn with the experts they can learn from.

I attended an event in Utrecht, in the Netherlands way back in 2007, at around the time that social media was emerging as a serious learning technology. The event was called 'Show that you Share' and focused on tools such as Creative Commons , personal learning environments and mobile phones as a means of creating, sharing and repurposing content, knowledge and artefacts for education.

The conference is themed around excellence in teaching of the social sciences, which reflects my own professional and academic background. During my undergraduate degree I specialised in psychology, but also studied a number of other social sciences, including politics, economics, sociology and human geography. I plan to explore several of the older social science theories, and compare and contrast these with some of the newer, emerging theories to determine what they offer.

I was challenged by delegates at Solstice to elaborate on the legal and ethical issues of Creative Commons and other Copyleft approaches. Creative Commons, I explained, is a means of circumventing Internet Copyright constraints. As each table came to grips with the Cultural, Cognitive, Constructive, Communicative, Confidence, Creative, Critical and Civic aspects of using technology to learn, we were then asked to choose two and develop a learning activity around them.

The one I considered to be the best was posted up onto my Flickr account , and labelled it for free reuse as I always do, under Creative Commons licencing. Posting your content on social media sites and making them available for free use and reuse is not only an equitable way of sharing the love. Whether or not something goes viral is left to the whims of the social web, but giving your content away for free can give it an excellent chance.

Humans are inherently social. Most of our learning is achieved within social contexts. Even when we are on our own, much of our learning through resources such as books and videos is mediated socially - there is another mind behind the resource. There are many social theories that explain our membership of 'tribes' or communities. We want to be accepted by others. I can't recall many examples where I have learnt something significant without the presence of others.
