Nothing new under the sun

Learning with 'e's

"What has been will be again, what has been done will be done again; there is nothing new under the sun." - Ecclesiastes 1:9 "In a hunting society, children play with bows and arrows. In an information society , children play with information" - Henry Jenkins "Goo d artists borrow, great artists steal." - Pablo Picasso What do these quotes have in common? Are we seeing evidence for the end of creativity, or a new kind of artistry?

The realms of possibility

Learning with 'e's

And yet such people brought us an understanding that the earth orbits the sun, time is relative, computers can do more for us than mere calculations, and much more. Such creativity of imagination produces the big inventions and revelations of our age. Various psychologists such as Csikszentmihalyi, Boden and Dweck refer to this as 'big C creativity.' It takes a creative mind, drawing on big C creativity to dream up new and disruptive ideas that will affect society deeply.

Classroom without walls

Learning with 'e's

Today, with the sun shining down on the UK's warmest March in recorded history, my students and I sat in a classroom without walls - literally. A most fundamental human right

Learning with e's

In the summer it is an oven, with the sun reflecting intensely off the stones and sand, and in the winter it is icy cold as the southern Antarctic winds whip across it mercilessly. Lionel talked to us about the harsh conditions in the prison, and the fact that all the prisoners had to work in the quarry breaking stones for hours each day with no shelter, and without sunglasses to shield their eyes from the glare of the sun.

It is unbearably hot in the fierce summer sun, and is cold and inhospitable in the winter months in the icy Antarctic wind. On the face of it, it seems that Jack Sparrow and Nelson Mandela have very little in common, and there is no comparison between a fictional pirate and a real-life hero who freed an entire nation. My #twistedpair are Nelson Mandela and Captain Jack Sparrow.

All you need is love

Learning with 'e's

More songs, poems, stories and movies have been written about love than any other subject under the sun. Phileo is a love that describes feelings of belonging, and a sense of common purpose. It''s something we all crave, and is often experienced in social groupings, friendship circles and clubs, where children (and adults) share a common purpose and goals. Sixties pop group The Beatles sang ''All you need is love,'' and then they broke up.

Our digital future 4: Pervasive computing

Now, for those who are unfamiliar with the Reform Symposium, let me explain: It's a 72 hour live web based symposium that follows the sun. Because of the growing power of networks and telecommunication systems, and the ever decreasing size of digital technology, we can now embed small (micro) computers into just about any object in common use, and they will communicate with each other, and with your personal technology. A few years ago I presented a keynote for the Reform Symposium.

A change of mindset is the first step, she says, in creating an environment in which students can explore, discover and create and go beyond the sun of the mill, every day learning that occurs in schools across the globe. They learn from their own mistakes and express themselves more creatively through their own endeavours.
