Sure, lots of companies want to replicate ‘Facebook’ behind the firewall; safe from prying eyes, but open enough for employees to freely express themselves. Today, I’m going to adopt a contrarian view.

IM is much more conversational. But because of the lag in IM, you can have multiple conversations simultaneously. With IM, it’s minutes. Possibilities for bridging time, culture, and difference as communication evolves. Still important to know the cultural context of where people are physically. Facebook & LinkedIn make it easy to keep in touch with people, including keeping a record of when we last had contact.

The Friend Connect feature on a site acts as a small peephole on a Web page allowing content from a preselected social network (including Facebook, Google Talk, hi5, orkut, Plaxo, and others)to be viewed within the predefined window. Players in this arena (although not exactly all in the same role or capacity) include Facebook Connect , the Data Portability Project (of which MySpace is a member ), and Googles Open Social.
