Friday Finds — Primitive Brain, ChatGPT Productivity, Steal Like an Artist

“The only true wisdom is in knowing you know nothing.”

— Socrates

I’ve hit the jackpot again with my visit to Auckland. It’s been raining here for months and I’ve seen more sun in my week than they’ve seen in a long time. While I didn’t have time to venture as far as I’d like, what I’ve seen is amazing. The people are super nice and for a big city, Auckland has a super chill vibe. If you ever get the chance to visit – take it! Now, I’ve just got to survive the monster flight home tomorrow. See you on the other side, friends.

As always, thanks for reading.

What I’m Listening To: Being so far away from home makes me think of John Denver and “Take Me Home”  It is good to travel and it is also good to get back home and sleep in your own bed again.

Your Primitive Brain Doesn’t Want You to Break Bad Habits. Science Can Help

Breaking bad habits can be tough due to our primitive brains, which are wired to seek pleasure and avoid pain. But, science has developed various effective methods to help us break bad habits and cultivate healthier ones.

To overcome bad habits, this article suggests setting specific goals, tracking progress, and enlisting the support of others. Positive emotions and mindfulness are also important in reducing stress and increasing self-awareness.

While some people may be naturally better at self-control than others, the article emphasizes that anyone can learn to develop this skill with practice and patience. By implementing science-backed strategies, it’s possible to overcome the challenges of our primitive brain and cultivate healthier habits for a happier and more fulfilling life.

The Science of Context

This article discusses the importance of understanding the impact of context on behavior. It highlights research that shows how our surroundings, circumstances, and environment can significantly influence our decisions and actions. By being aware of how context can shape behavior, we can design environments and situations that encourage positive behavior and discourage negative behavior. The article also explores how context can impact our perception of time, our ability to focus, and our level of motivation. Understanding the role of context in behavior can help us make better decisions and achieve our goals more effectively.

Level Up Your Prompt Craft with the CREATE Framework

Tom Barrett, provides valuable insights and practical tips for educators looking to design effective learning frameworks. He emphasizes the importance of a clear vision and purpose for the framework, as well as the need to involve stakeholders in the design process. He also suggests considering the context, such as the learning environment and learner needs, when creating a framework.

To create a successful framework, he recommends focusing on three key elements: outcomes, experiences, and assessment. These elements can be used to design learning activities that align with the overall vision and purpose of the framework. He also encourages educators to continually evaluate and refine their frameworks based on feedback and data.

New MIT Research Shows Spectacular Increase In White Collar Productivity From ChatGPT

Josh Bersin discusses a new research study from MIT that shows a significant increase in white-collar productivity due to the use of artificial intelligence (AI) chatbots, particularly ChatGPT. The study found that employees who used ChatGPT were able to complete tasks faster and more accurately, leading to a 40% increase in productivity. This study also notes that the use of AI chatbots can free up employees’ time and enable them to focus on more complex tasks, ultimately leading to improved job satisfaction and higher retention rates.

L&D Professionals…Learn To Steal Like an Artist

Catherine Lombardozzi emphasizes the importance of “borrowing” ideas from others in order to create and innovate in the L&D industry.

She argues (and I agree) that many great ideas are often just a combination of pre-existing ideas that have been reimagined and repurposed. By drawing inspiration from a variety of sources, you can create something truly unique and original.

For example, you could examine how successful companies handle employee onboarding or how popular video games engage their players. By borrowing techniques and applying them to your own work, you can create something fresh and innovative.

Where do you look for inspiration to create something truly unique and effective in the L&D field?
