I've been exploring Ning a little further than I did and compared it to other forums like socialgo, collectivex and grou.ps. Gro.ups is open source, has a lot of similar functionalities to ning (and more- you can upload files easily) and is also without advertisements (for free!). A few tips for ning administrators: 1.

I expected Ning to close it when they went to pay-to-play. After all, their site says: Deadline for Selecting a Ning Plan Has Passed. We are no longer offering or supporting free Ning Networks. If you haven’t selected a plan for your free Ning Network, you can no longer access the network.

No service companies. Clearly says something about the state of the fragmented eLearning market -- mostly small shops providing services or companies doing it in-house using all of the aforementioned tools. If you were to ask people whose companies buy in elearning, youd be more likely to hear about the service companies.

I was also struggling for clients who needed very simple learning tracking but with some customizations. For example my search for an LMS Solution for Simple Partner Compliance Training didn’t really arrive at just the right solution. Marketplace LMS solutions don’t quite fit. Neither do more complex solutions.
