Learning Management: What does a Training Company need an LMS for?

Upside Learning

Training companies the world over are changing the way they operate and the services they offer customers. An important one is the inclusion of eLearning (or online training) as part of their core offerings for existing and new customers. Such an offering is not purely driven by a cost-saving strategy on the customer’s part, but is also due to the growing acceptance of eLearning as an effective way of delivering training.

I include Learning Portals, LCMSs, as part of the mix. Big Dog (Saba, SumTotal, Plateau, Cornerstone OnDemand, Learn.com). The e-commerce component itself includes a robust function set beyond just the ability to accept credit cards; and the look of the site typically appears as a “learning portal&# , clean, crisp and reminds me more of a web page with products (again, depending on the LMS vendor or system) with maybe advertising capabilities included.

Custom domains – rather than have yourcompany.vendorname.com, some systems are now offering custom domains so that your learners see whatever name you create.com and remove the vendor name. Talk to anyone who has a multi-tenant (multi-portal) platform and immediately they will pitch that they are ideal for any markets including the B2B. What they fail to miss immediately, is just having a multi-tenant platform/aka parent/child/child aka portal/sub-portal aka PAAS (Platform as a Services) with multiple instances, is just a piece of the whole pie. So adding new branded sub-portals/children/clients is quick and easy to do. Unlimited children/sub-portals/etc.

Video’s Role in the Enterprise

KZO Innovations

OnDemand video is the most widespread form used, but live video has an impressive presence as well. Enterprise video solutions are often – and should be – presented in the form of an organizational YouTube-like video portal. Video also drives marketing , brand awareness, increased sales, and better customer support. Video is everywhere, transforming the way we learn, work, shop, communicate, collaborate, and entertain.

LMSs that kick-ass: Latitude

Investing in LMS development to repurpose it into something it is not–a flexible web portal–might not be the most cost-effective either. Latitude’s approach to developing a learning portal that creates a peer-to-peer, individual-driven learning environment depends on current existing technology, such as the Ektron 400 content management system. In other words, the software application to create the ideal learning portal is the CMS and LMS.

Step right up to the LMS Sideshow

This ‘only a well known’ argument is similar to one I hear in regards to buying a system that doesn’t have any customers in XTZ, so therefore it can’t be good. Trust me when I say this, someone out there was the first to use Cornerstone OnDemand. Some vendors are now tossing in a free custom domain – which rocks, but does not slide under my minimums. Hello, hello, hello! Come over and see the show.
