Product Review: Plateau TMS (Talent Management System)

I’ll be the first to admit, that I was not a big fan of the previous versions of the Plateau system. After viewing the Plateau TMS, my concerns in one area have been eliminated, in others, not so much. Plateau LMS is a Talent Management System, made up of four modules. Plateau Learning. Plateau Performance. Plateau Career and Succession. Plateau Compensation. Front end (what the end user sees) UI – A giant Kudos to Plateau.

LMS Products of the Year 2010. A lot of great products out there this year, new updates and latest versions; new companies, new services and just some real innovation. Big Dog (Saba, SumTotal, Plateau, Cornerstone OnDemand, Learn.com). If you are seeking TM as your focus and you want one of the big dogs – I found Plateau’s system to offer appropriate functionality for it, but found some real concern in other areas (see my product review).

When I talk about a LMS, I am saying specifically a learning management system and the vendors themselves should see their own product first and foremost as a LMS, not as a TM/PM or whatever. There is a wide assumption that if a product sells a lot it means that it is better than anyone else. Yet if you look at the marketplace of any consumer product you will see that is not always the case. From a general product standpoint, go take a look at Amazon.com or Consumer Reports.

And BTW, nearly every LMS can interface with Oracle products. SuccessFactors – Just for those folks to remember, SF is owned by SAP and had acquired Plateau. They haven’t been Plateau for a few years, so stop calling them Plateau – a pet peeve of mine. The previous, Growth Engineering is still a phenomenal product, much more than just gamification. It’s nearly here.

SumTotal is calling their product a Human Capital Management system. Oracle then followed suit by acquiring SuccessFactors who had acquired Plateau in the past. I’m sure the people who had purchased Plateau or even SuccessFactors Learning system were delighted to hear the news. It is just another pitch to drive customers using a fear factor, that frankly is getting tiresome. And now a brief announcement: Shocking news!

Even if it is integrated at no additional charge, there are customers who will never use it. Continued increase in the number of vendors, regardless of size or target customer size (i.e Expect to see an increase in systems adding compensation, other workforce mgt features and benefits to their products.
