Back when I first started developing e-learning courses, I used Macromedia's Authorware. It has gotten to a point where some of my courses are all developed in Flash and the e-learning authoring tools (DHTML) have been used more as a "shell" that decompiles it as a SCORM package.

So you know my perspective, since my start in e-learning I have always been both a designer and developer. In my instructional design graduate program, UMBC , I took several courses that focused on development, but they really only scratched the surface. Keep in mind some may be DHTML output, others create Flash SWFs.

Also while coding SCORM implementation try to avoid [advanced JavaScript functions (DHTML, regular expressions)] as each browser has varying degree of JavaScript support. A Native application solution: The problem that arises from not having continuous connectivity can be resolved by developing a native application for the mobile device.

and Shift in eLearning from Pure Courseware towards Reference Hybrids , I've realized that one of the mental models I use can be roughly summarized by the following picture: where Ease is roughly how easy (cost, time) is it to develop using that approach and Power is the ability of the tool to provide robust, complex learning solutions.

It is a glimpse not just into their development tool preferences, but it also provides some reflection into the approaches they take in creating courses. ToolBook authoring tool - this is the DHTML authoring tool used at my company, but prior to this I used TrainerSoft (now Outstart Trainer), which is my preference.

Several of the Dummies books have a cartoon at the beginning of each chapter.

OutStart Trainer - I am currently using another DHTML editor in which I am not enthralled at all. m-Learning development tool that produces courses compatible with ALL mobile platforms. High end microphone - It will come in very handy for adding audio to courses, plus it will look great on my desk.
