For those of you unaware of DevLearn, the show has been around for years and is one of e-learning guild’s premier shows in my opinion. While there were LMS vendors present, this is a show more suited for authoring tool vendors, e-learning tool vendors and vendors who enhance or increase engagement in courses or content.

Well back to another expo conference installment – this time it is DevLearn Day 1. Excluding the obvious authoring tools and some LMS vendors, I found these themes with numerous vendors attending the expo: Remediation – as in our product increases retention better than a LMS. Blame it on the LMS.

In the course of the past month, I’ve attended (and spoken at) 4 conferences: DevLearn, WCET, VSS, and Online Educa. Each was from a different area: DevLearn is mostly corporate, WCET is largely higher ed, VSS is mostly K12, and Online Educa is more academic (and European). There are some bright spots of innovation and excitement.

This week I attended my first DevLearn, and as hyped as it was in the months prior to the event, it did not disappoint. DevLearn is one of the largest events in the learning industry; according to the conference website, 1,747 people registered for the event. Surprisingly, though, it didn’t feel impersonal to me.

Oh, and not the first vendor I’ve seen this route, but that was more than a decade ago. There are vendors who pitch they have it, and there are folks who oversee L&D who still believe in it. Long has tools such as Studio and Captivate been on the higher side, the same can be said for vendors such as Rapid Intake and dominKnow. Because other vendors are getting into the act as well. What is an equal frightening event is when authoring tool vendors do not even list their pricing on their page. So why the fear?
