LMS' like WebCT, Blackboard, and Desire2Learn offer their greatest value to the organization by providing a means to sequence content and create a manageable structure for instructors/administration staff. WebCT and Blackboard have recently formed partnerships with synchronous tools to allow for easy integration across platforms.

consolidation continues - BlackBoard + WebCT & more.

The Learning Circuits

Today BlackBoard announced plans to merge with WebCT; the two leading providers in the higher education eLearning space (BlackBoard alone forecasts US$150M+ for their fiscal year). It also doesn't bode well for WebCT's willingness to play with open source (sorry Harold!) Clark - you need to update your Chart of Consolidations !

Interactivity–more than just reading and discussion. Visual test with maps–created in WebCT, can be done elsewhere too. Faculty satisfaction. Small steps. Conversational–course evaluations are better for courses with a conversational tone. No lecture pages–no big long text. Online is different.

How our learning theories shape how we use technology for learning

In Ning, the technology invites me to start on the fly with new discussions. An example: when I work with Moodle the technology invites me to prepare the course with all sections in advance. This stimulates a more flexible role for the facilitator. It is important to know your own convictions when choosing and using technology.

However, it’s important not to get overwhelmed by the features of different Learning Management Systems.
