The LMS/LCMS/Learning Portal market continues to be strong. In my latest directory, 393 LMS vendors – global, of which 34 or so are open source systems. Folding up shop and switching to a new market: Talent/Performance Management, new product lines not tied to e-learning, services. It was a myth.

Just as in any industry there are people who lie or as we say “misrepresented” their product. I have run into the same issue – salespeople who say their product does A but in reality it does not. . Or they send the RFP after a discussion, but before seeing the product. It hurts everyone.

You can try to figure out about the product via the company’s web site, but many sites honestly are beyond awful. They fail to even clearly show their product, let alone present the product sans the standard PPT intro that comes with “learn more” about the solution. Right product? 90 minutes.

Case in point, one vendor who had a RFP on their site, for anyone to download, had statements in there – that truly applied to their product. As the evolution of e-learning continues, the rapid content authoring tools (RCAT) market follows suit. This is a growing market with new vendors showing up, but at the same time, others disappearing. Macromedia Authorware and similar products. 43 Vendors do not have one. So nobody can see their product.
