Especially for us fans of HTML5 who knew in our hearts of hearts that it was a superior product to Flash. 9th, that it is abandoning its work on Flash for mobile devices and instead focusing on mobile development of development of HTML5 for mobile. This will only empower folks in the e-learning industry who were pro-HTML5 and believed as I do, that it is the better route to go. I know if I was a RCAT vendor I would. Awesome Example of HTML5.

Fears of the Course Authoring Tool Market

Its nearly Halloween and with that comes the shocking and fearful excitement or lack thereof of the scariest things on the plane appearing at the movie theaters, in costumes, television and for us, the course authoring tool market. Just in the past two years the per license cost of authoring tools has skyrocketed. Long has tools such as Studio and Captivate been on the higher side, the same can be said for vendors such as Rapid Intake and dominKnow. E-Learning 24/7.

Tools these days come in three flavors. Geared toward e-learning developers and instructional designers. Authoring Tools for developers. The biggest problem facing the industry in the past few years are the lack of course authoring tools for e-learning developers and instructional designers. New Authoring tool rankings #11 to #20

Initially I wasn’t going to post authoring tool rankings beyond the top ten, until July. However, in the past week, I have received over 500 e-mails from readers requesting a list of the top twenty (rather than top then). 20 eLab - The user interface is intriguing and enables anyone to build a course, without having the typical “ooh that looks so lame” with some rapid content authoring tools. 1st vendor to have online/offline mobile synch.

Authoring Tool Market – What I am seeing

Because the industry as a whole is a lemming, I expect more vendors to come on board. HTML5 output. Right now I am doing a survey on authoring tools (more on this at the end of the post) and so far 100% of all respondents state that HTML5 output is required in an authoring tool. I do believe that HTML5 output will continue to grow as an authoring tool feature. It is time to realize that Flash output just isn’t enough anymore for folks.

I knew that its core audience would be instructional designers and e-learning developers. . I suspected that the expo would feature a large quantity of rapid content authoring tools. From products that ranged from the latest versions of RCATs to new vendors in the space, including text to speech. . Back in 2000, the knock on rapid content authoring tools were they “pre-template” driven solutions. Who in their right mind, would use these tools?

The RCAT (rapid content authoring tool) market continues to be healthy with nothing to slow it down – uh, except maybe one thing (more on that later). Yeah, I know we have just jumped into January, but in a review of the past several months, authoring tools continue to follow a similar path amongst themselves with certain feature sets. I am still surprised on how vendors who are offering assessment only tools are staying in the game. HTML5.

Times are changing – trends in the content authoring tool market

There are 124 authoring tools in my latest directory, of which 30 are SaaS or a combination of desktop and SaaS – which really what is the point of that? Even though more tools are adding the features of collaborative and peer review (more on that in a sec) they are still heavy geared towards a desktop solution. You work online via the servers of your vendor. Vendors who are already in the SaaS only space, should continue to offer features that maximize its power.

E-Learning Screen recording and video solutions – Should b simple, so why isn’t it?

There are more vendors who do not offer the ability to post – i.e. add audio afterwards it is quite amazing. Again, simple and yet again arguably with many vendors difficult to do. There are dozens of free audio plugins available on the net, so why aren’t screen capturing/recording vendors offering the ability for the end user to add them? Another issue I have with many vendors who offer effects – again, I like that – is that they fail to mention.

Articulate, Captivate and Lectora – Do they deserve your praise?

What I found was an extensive group of people hungry for anything e-learning. Hungry to learn as much as they could and hungry to see what was in the space. My sense of it all, was that regardless of the location the buzz is all e-learning. I wasn’t surprised on the e-learning excitement. When people think authoring tools, three products typically come to mind. It is easy to use and once you learn it, easy to push out content.

Can output to MP4 or Flash, I loved the MP4. It can be embed into your web site, added to your LMS, but to me the real awesomeness is the ability to add into any authoring tool. It’s one big drawback – no support for SCORM, but hey, since it is ideal for sticking in to your course, rather than as a standalone authoring tool, it works. Please note they do not yet support HTML5, but again with MP4 no worries – it can be seen on any tablet, including iPad.

LMSs/LCMS/CMS/learning platforms in commercial and open space continued their presence. I have seen continued interest and downloads for open source AR tool kits. Samsung Galaxy S is expected to be the first real challenger to the iPad, it runs on Android OS, offers Flash 10.1 and HTML5. LMS Vendors and Tablets Update. Again, the iPad runs only with HTML5, not Flash 10.1. True, the other tablets and Samsung offer Flash 10.1, but they offer HTML5 too. But with LMS vendors jumping into the mobile learning sector, at least in some cases, it may be a tad misleading. LMS/LCMS/CMS Vendors.

Raptivity is an interaction tool. Its target audience is the rapid content authoring tool market, but while it tries to hit it, it also misses at many levels. Raptivity calls their product an interaction tool with templates, games, simulations, etc. In order to achieve that, you have to buy all their packs and the HTML5 pack. What I like about conferences is the ability to see the latest products and hear the pitches from the vendors. Yet, for all that do it, their are equal number of vendors who do not. Vendors who do not have anyone in their booth, during expo times – I see this at all shows, regardless of the product or market; but at e-learning/training shows you see it a lot OR you see them eating in their booth. Top 10 LMS/LCMS Trends and Forecasts

The trends apply to both LMS/LCMS vendors. Extended Enterprise - Vendors are expanding into the wholesaler/reseller/affiliates/sales agent sector with their solutions. The note of interest is that it is occurring with all size of vendors, albeit the charge is being led by mid size vendors. Not all of the big dog vendors have entered this space, despite it being a huge revenue opportunity. and European vendors interestingly enough, do not follow suit.

Apparently, the potential customers and even clients are speaking and those vendors are listening. Not just a few vendors, the industry as a whole. There is a growing list of vendors, including small/mid size that are adding talent management components that match the Big Dog systems. A couple of vendors have added HRIS modules. It is interesting to note, that many of the vendors are targeting the SMB space, especially the small size (less than 500 employees) market. What I found was a solution that is a rapid e-learning authoring tool that offers easy to use functions as uploading learners and basic tracking results. A course dashboard that offers some intuitiveness and simple to use, with easy to follow tools. The system provides an assessment tool that is built-in within the product. Once you launch the course – the system automatically converts your course into a Flash. Name and e-mail address is not.

I include Learning Portals, LCMSs, as part of the mix. Extended Enterprise – System must have e-comm, multi-tenet – fully skinnable, additional functionality. Social Learning – must have social learning functionality beyond just the standards FB like page, microblog, RSS feed, upload video, follow me thing, these are systems that either advertise themselves as SLMSs or have a significant strong set of SL features. Social Learning is limited.

The Revolution is Coming: Consumer Tablets and E-Learning

E-Learning and all forms within are normally taken via your desktop computer and either hitting your company’s server with your browser or going to a hosted LMS vendor’s solution. If you wanted to work on creating content, for many people, the route would be and still is creating courses via a desktop based rapid e-learning authoring tool, or via your LMS/LCMS vendor’s tool (hosted or not) or via Dreamweaver or some other type of solution.

I can honestly say, the ATD show is changing from ILT driven (it has always been that way) to e-learning improvement. This year, I estimated a 55/60% e-learning, including some ILT vendors offering some type of e-learning component. .
