I had a good chuckle today after receiving my latest emailed copy of the eLearning Guild 's eLearningInsider update. A linked feature story in the update that immediately caught my eye was titled " Best Practices for Creating Mobile Learning Content " and clicking that link shuttled me over to SumTotal's corporate web site where I registered to download their latest mobile-related white paper.

Twice a year I will be providing some trends that I am seeing in the e-learning market. This one trend really is an irritation to me, because the term “training” is showing up rather than “learning”, which is the standard term as it relates to online learning (see it already?). We call online learning, e-learning, not e-training, but some vendors will have you believe that “training” is the appropriate term, rather than learning.

You will not forget them when you view a demo, nor when you are looking at the company’s web site or literature. I often hear people say they want mobile learning in their solution, social learning, e-commerce, but when you ask for specifics they sometimes have a blank stare on their face. If you want an EE, you will want e-commerce. What about a payment gateway – does the LMS vendor assist you with this or do you have to find your own?

LMSs Segment Breakout (By the percentage of total number of vendors in each segment). Vendor: Litmos. E-Commerce and accepts multi-currencies.

Web site. If you need some additional tweaks – maybe it is included “free&# (again, already calculated ahead of time, by them (the vendors – as an enticement) or street priced. Same approach LMS/LCMS vendors take when it comes to their systems. Your company is going places and your LMS vendor could be part of that expansion and more importantly, as you expand – you will need more SEATS – thus MORE REVENUE for your vendor.
