A Look Back at E-Learning in 2012

Mobile Learning. LMSs – Finally vendors took notice. Sadly though many still are in the dark on true mobile learning – i.e. not accessing their platform via a mobile web browser. Authoring Tools – With only a small sample of vendors that are SaaS based, pickings are slim. Those who aren’t are either offering native apps with online/offline synch or performing the shell game via the mobile web browser and calling it mobile learning.

What I am hearing and seeing in E-Learning

It comes from fellow readers who send me e-mails or talk to me via social media. It comes from me talking to vendors, buyers, monitoring the industry all the while taking notes and seeing the trends/patterns appear right before my eyes. What has always amazed me are number of e-learning vendor web sites whose design looks like it came from 1995 when Netscape ruled the land. Upside Learning. They involved talent management, “hello and goodbye” with vendors, social learning, upswing in mobile learning, new feature sets in the authoring tool space, flat lining in web conferencing and standalone platforms. LMSs/LCMS/CMS/learning platforms in commercial and open space continued their presence. For the mobile learning space – it is a necessity. Low Cost LMSs – Yes, u can find one for under 10K

Some systems in this space include e-commerce at no additional charge. Any vendor, who includes a set storage fee, should be able to provide you a range of number of courses – with examples and video/audio files – if you plan to use them. Many vendors’ sites do not state this information in their pricing. Some 50K or more systems could learn from the top low cost systems on some things. E-Learning 24/7.

ASTDTK14 zoomed into Vegas last week with about 60 vendors (est.) On the expo side, and I know ASTD Events are going to disagree with me (err, they already have via Linkedin), I wasn’t overly impressed on the number of vendors’ booths. Authoring tools vendors – pickings were slim, Adobe was present, so was Allen Interactions (Zebra Zapps), but no Articulate? Mobile specific tools or m-learning spin tools – were not as extensive as I was expecting.

I am still surprised on how vendors who are offering assessment only tools are staying in the game. This will become one of the biggest features in 2012 – especially with people wanting to create simulations without being an e-learning developer. Some vendors push heavily on PPT, implying that a great WBT is really a PPT converted to Flash. Over 98% of the LMS/LCMS/learning platform have at least one compliance standard, so why use a RCAT that doesn’t?

E-Learning Screen recording and video solutions – Should b simple, so why isn’t it?

There are more vendors who do not offer the ability to post – i.e. add audio afterwards it is quite amazing. Again, simple and yet again arguably with many vendors difficult to do. There are dozens of free audio plugins available on the net, so why aren’t screen capturing/recording vendors offering the ability for the end user to add them? Another issue I have with many vendors who offer effects – again, I like that – is that they fail to mention.

What’s hurting the LMS market

Make no mistake, there are plenty of vendors out there who believe in the concept of focusing on features and forgetting about usability, under the guise that people would rather have lots of cool blinky things rather than usability. While this is a great concept for party decorations, it is not for a learning platform. There are a plethora of vendors out there, with blinders on. . Yet, many vendors are doing exactly that. The grades are in for Education focused LMSs

Most systems in the education space are still strongly focused on synchronous based learning. SaaS – I would prefer a vendor who offers SaaS only and not a SaaS or client hosted or G-D forbid client hosted only option. Other cool components that are part of this system, Community Content Commons – repository of learning objects, resources – created, vetted and assessed by the Epsilen community, external content providers including CSIS and PBS.

Recently, I conducted an emerging technology survey related to e-learning and the results show that end users are utilizing technology more then ever before and are seeking product features that LMS and content authoring tools, do not offer at this current time. Social Learning – What’s the Point? Time to turn the tables on the naysayers

That is what one senior exec said to me, the other day when it came to social learning. For vendors, they could make it happen and generate revenue. Even with slideshare, you can actually post e-books and other documents, so it follows suit in a system. Expand it, so that e-books, documents, audio files can be viewed on e-book readers, if it is ePub (the most used format, and recognized with every e-reader, sans Kindle) it will work. Vendors in this space include Docebo, eFront, Litmos and of course Totara. My Learning tab – shows alerts, recent learning, upcoming events. Graphical progress bar – basically less text or funky icons that only the vendor knows what is – example, a recall one vendor using a floppy disk to represent an online course. Unless their is some group component here or the psuedo Facebook angle, I see no real gain. My Learning.

It was within these comments, that afterwords, I decided to expand a bit plus identify other areas that I see, LMS vendors must explore – which they have not yet done so, to re-energize themselves. When you need a fix, then the LMS vendor must work with you either remote to solve it or if it is big nasty fix, go on site. SaaS and LMS vendors. Mind you, there is nothing wrong with doing so, and there are some nice advantages to it – mainly one stop shop, but if you are a LMS vendor who does not have an authoring tool built-in, it will not cause your demise. Top 10 LMS/LCMS Trends and Forecasts

The trends apply to both LMS/LCMS vendors. Extended Enterprise - Vendors are expanding into the wholesaler/reseller/affiliates/sales agent sector with their solutions. The note of interest is that it is occurring with all size of vendors, albeit the charge is being led by mid size vendors. Not all of the big dog vendors have entered this space, despite it being a huge revenue opportunity. and European vendors interestingly enough, do not follow suit.

If the vendor offers a trial, it will identify if known the length of the trial. If the vendor uses any social media, the name is listed (example: Twitter, Facebook, etc). List does not include Open Source – FREE LMS vendors which are posted elsewhere on the site.

Latest E-Learning Trends – Some good, some bad

I mean ever&# , from a senior executive at a mid to large size vendor that has been in the market for several years. Across the board, a large number of vendors (from small to large) saw increases in their quarter numbers. Especially, when vendors released their 2010 final numbers and saw big increases from the previous year. A trend that is happening in the LMS market more so than in the other e-learning markets, is the failure to follow their path of success.

So, when I went and checked out Saba Social, Saba’s new social learning platform, I had very low expectations. Bookmark feature is interesting, but with this one item – Saba’s past UI issues appear – too bad, it has an spin on the bookmark concept.epub file upload that worked, which is rarely seen in any file acceptance of other social learning systems and even the majority of e-learning solutions to begin with. One Step Behind

Back in the day, a punk rock group called Madness released a wonderful tune called, “ One Step Beyond “, sadily if you were to look at the state of the e-learning industry as a whole today, perhaps the song should have been called, “One Step Behind&#. The bridge has to be installed and integrated into the computer – web conferencing vendors should and some do, recommend that the bridge setup is handled by IT/IS personnel. I know of vendors who offer the capability of editing the audio, before it is posted, regardless if they are using VOIP or not. There are some web conf vendors that enable the capability, that when the attendee registers, they can select Outlook or Gmail and have the event auto scheduled.
