Its nearly Halloween and with that comes the shocking and fearful excitement or lack thereof of the scariest things on the plane appearing at the movie theaters, in costumes, television and for us, the course authoring tool market. Long has tools such as Studio and Captivate been on the higher side, the same can be said for vendors such as Rapid Intake and dominKnow. Because other vendors are getting into the act as well. Fear of the Mobile Bogeyman aka HTML5.

Authoring Tool Market – What I am seeing

Nope, it is based on studying the market and analyzing it. Because the industry as a whole is a lemming, I expect more vendors to come on board. HTML5 output. Right now I am doing a survey on authoring tools (more on this at the end of the post) and so far 100% of all respondents state that HTML5 output is required in an authoring tool. I do believe that HTML5 output will continue to grow as an authoring tool feature. HTML5 templates. E-Learning 24/7.

The RCAT (rapid content authoring tool) market continues to be healthy with nothing to slow it down – uh, except maybe one thing (more on that later). I am still surprised on how vendors who are offering assessment only tools are staying in the game. This will become one of the biggest features in 2012 – especially with people wanting to create simulations without being an e-learning developer. Flash output – still red hot. HTML5.

Latest data: 95% of the tablet market is owned by iPad. 35 tablets will hit the market starting in early Q4 to late Q1 2011. Samsung Galaxy S is expected to be the first real challenger to the iPad, it runs on Android OS, offers Flash 10.1 and HTML5. HP Slate already is in the market, runs on Windows7, but targets the business market. There are over 30 tablets already in the market, besides the iPad, including some that run on the Android OS.

As the rapid content authoring market continues to grow, new features and capabilities are equally growing. You work online via the servers of your vendor. I had thought that this trend would be dying out, but it is amazing at the number of vendors who are entering the space and still focused on the desktop approach. For my instructional designers and e-learning developers, they loved creating courses. Layers and Conditions – if you have experience with Photoshop or similar products that use layers, then your learning curve is less. From products that ranged from the latest versions of RCATs to new vendors in the space, including text to speech. . Not so much, from what I saw – some of the tools were underwhelming (granted some were quite impressive), but rather how the vendors themselves perceived where the market is going and what customers want in their authoring tools. There is a growing list of vendors, including small/mid size that are adding talent management components that match the Big Dog systems. A couple of vendors have added HRIS modules. It is interesting to note, that many of the vendors are targeting the SMB space, especially the small size (less than 500 employees) market. What is nice is there are still a significant number of vendors who have not added it. What’s not to love about the EE market?

What I like about conferences is the ability to see the latest products and hear the pitches from the vendors. Yet, for all that do it, their are equal number of vendors who do not. E-Learning Trade Shows. Vendors who do not have anyone in their booth, during expo times – I see this at all shows, regardless of the product or market; but at e-learning/training shows you see it a lot OR you see them eating in their booth.

In order to achieve that, you have to buy all their packs and the HTML5 pack. I include Learning Portals, LCMSs, as part of the mix. Extended Enterprise – System must have e-comm, multi-tenet – fully skinnable, additional functionality. In 2010, the RCAT market continued its upswing and nothing indicates to me it will be changing anytime soon. Innovation abounded and the push to focus on the “PPT to Flash&# angle continued to shine. The Big Dogs – which in this case, deals more with market share, for the most part continued to push forward, yet from an innovation standpoint, uh, solid, but not outstanding. The Revolution is Coming: Consumer Tablets and E-Learning

E-Learning and all forms within are normally taken via your desktop computer and either hitting your company’s server with your browser or going to a hosted LMS vendor’s solution. If you wanted to work on creating content, for many people, the route would be and still is creating courses via a desktop based rapid e-learning authoring tool, or via your LMS/LCMS vendor’s tool (hosted or not) or via Dreamweaver or some other type of solution.

That said, there were some hiccups and from an entire vendor wise (expo here) angle, some unique and some, uh. Okay, before jumping in, I want to thank all those who attended my session, E-Learning 2020. . I can honestly say, the ATD show is changing from ILT driven (it has always been that way) to e-learning improvement. This year, I estimated a 55/60% e-learning, including some ILT vendors offering some type of e-learning component. .
