How to choose an external e-learning vendor ?

Ideaon

Interaction with a prospective vendor can show and shed more light than reading up about them or viewing their work online. What skills does the e-learning vendor offer? Are the skills that the vendor brings, something that is complementary to your team?

HTML5 Fans Rejoice – Adobe Ditches Flash Player on Mobile Devices

Especially for us fans of HTML5 who knew in our hearts of hearts that it was a superior product to Flash. 9th, that it is abandoning its work on Flash for mobile devices and instead focusing on mobile development of development of HTML5 for mobile. This will only empower folks in the e-learning industry who were pro-HTML5 and believed as I do, that it is the better route to go. I know if I was a RCAT vendor I would. E-Learning 247.

Course Authoring Tools for eLearning Developers and the masses

Fears of the Course Authoring Tool Market

eLearning 24-7

Long has tools such as Studio and Captivate been on the higher side, the same can be said for vendors such as Rapid Intake and dominKnow. Because other vendors are getting into the act as well. Captivate 6 – $899 (per license), you want the full e-learning suite?

E-Learning Screen recording and video solutions – Should b simple, so why isn’t it?

eLearning 24-7

There are more vendors who do not offer the ability to post – i.e. add audio afterwards it is quite amazing. Again, simple and yet again arguably with many vendors difficult to do. There are dozens of free audio plugins available on the net, so why aren’t screen capturing/recording vendors offering the ability for the end user to add them? Another issue I have with many vendors who offer effects – again, I like that – is that they fail to mention.

4 Tips to Effectively Convert Adobe Flash E-learning to HTML5

CommLab India

Adobe Flash is dying. Long ago Steve Jobs stopped the usage of Flash in Apple devices. But, ever since Google announced that it would block flash in its browsers, the impact has been huge. Also, most of the Android devices too do not support Flash. Let’s admit it!

LMS Ghost stories – The truth will scare you

eLearning 24-7

But what you rarely hear, is something I have often been hearing, which isn’t going from any spirit, rather it is coming from some LMS vendors. It is a sound so unbearable, a phrase or two so strange and misleading, you would think you were hearing it from… the salesperson’s mouth (or via e-mail). Any vendor who sees you as a potential customer, should go to your web site and grab the banner/header or colors and place it in your demo before you begin.

When your LMS BFF is no longer

eLearning 24-7

The big elephant in the room that we hear so many times and vendors love to pitch (to get you to their system), but rarely the vendors themselves will admit to – many have only themselves to blame. Sometimes, it is the client’s fault and sometimes it is the vendor’s fault. I know, I know it is never your fault (client) – its those nasty LMS vendors, but as with the failure to recognize, often more than not it is duality, at least at some level.

Review of ASTD International Trade Expo

eLearning 24-7

Lots of vendors, lots of potential. There were vendors that had nice LMSs and cool features. It just wasn’t me thinking this, I heard it from attendees and even other vendors who were trolling the floor. E-Learning has been minimal. I would estimate that there was a 60-40 split, still instructor led driven, but even a significant number of the ILT vendors were offering subsets or capabilities to turn their ILT into online via webinars or online courses.

Follows a conversational approach to learning – which is so much better than hearing the word and then repeating it, with zero idea on what it means and more importantly, how to use it in general conversation. I see it not only as a standalone but also as a course or courses within a learning platform. Equally surprising are the lack of LMS vendors. E-Learning 24/7.

Authoring Tool Market – What I am seeing

eLearning 24-7

Because the industry as a whole is a lemming, I expect more vendors to come on board. It is time to realize that Flash output just isn’t enough anymore for folks. If you are an e-learning developer or instructional designer this has always been a favorite feature of authoring tools. In just the past month, I have seen quite a few vendors add this capability in their product – and for the most part they are all RCAT products. E-Learning 24/7.

The Latest: Rapid Content Authoring Tool Market

eLearning 24-7

I am still surprised on how vendors who are offering assessment only tools are staying in the game. This will become one of the biggest features in 2012 – especially with people wanting to create simulations without being an e-learning developer. Some vendors push heavily on PPT, implying that a great WBT is really a PPT converted to Flash. Flash output – still red hot. Vendor adoption is slow.

E-Learning End Users Have Spoken – time for the industry to listen

eLearning 24-7

Recently, I conducted an emerging technology survey related to e-learning and the results show that end users are utilizing technology more then ever before and are seeking product features that LMS and content authoring tools, do not offer at this current time. With an increase in e-learning sales a, projections of 7.1 billion dollars (USD) by 2015 and an increase in competition in the space, it is time for vendors to act. E-Learning 24/7.

Times are changing – trends in the content authoring tool market

eLearning 24-7

You work online via the servers of your vendor. I had thought that this trend would be dying out, but it is amazing at the number of vendors who are entering the space and still focused on the desktop approach. Despite the overwhelmingly number of vendors who have a “desktop only&# solution, based on what I am seeing- a result of new feature sets – this will change. Remember when only a few offered the PPT to Flash option in their tools? Mobile Learning.

The partner approach works this way: vendor A integrates Vendor B’s solution into their product. Some times, it is nothing more than a link – hidden from the end user – the screen shows a popup or goes to the “page” but in reality the end user is now in the other vendor’s solution. Other vendors are exploring the addition of avatars that can communicate with one another. I believe a new sub-genre of e-learning is upon us.

It was within these comments, that afterwords, I decided to expand a bit plus identify other areas that I see, LMS vendors must explore – which they have not yet done so, to re-energize themselves. Thus, the LMS vendors are creating a Bogeyman – their own bogeyman, and it does not have to be that way. Majority of employees access a LMS or Learning Portal out of the workplace.
