For some vendors the words are just words, not actually making it happen, and when they do, many charge for the privilege of you contacting them. I’m sorry, if I am spending thousands of dollars on a system, I expect customer service – at least the first year to be free. . Moodle Syndrome. Marketing.

I think my dinosaur status as an instructional designer stems from the fact that Ive always worked for e-Learning vendors where the programming, graphics, and ID are distinct, separate job roles. Typically APIs are free. However there are vendors who sell their API solution wrapped in a piece of software. Let’s say though you do not want to add the specific site in your LMS, etc. Let’s say you want your own web conferencing solution and not the one the vendor has partnered with. Moodle and Drupal.

Certainly with the rise of rapid e-Learning tools and the increase in SME-published content well start to see an increase in the frequency of updates to e-Learning material. As an e-Learning vendor, I think its our responsibility to make sure that our clients have thought this through.

You can use either your own 3rd party content authoring tool and upload it into the “Cloud&# and then wherever you are, output either to your LMS, or onto Moodle or even WordPress (they have a plug in for that) OR place the course in Facebook or nearly any solution that accepts APIs. In social networking alone, over 385 sites.

In today’s market there is no reason to buy a product that requires you to do a full customization, either on the front end, back end or entire system, unless – you decided to go with an open source solution such as Moodle or Drupal, where you need that extensive customization. Many in the education market are still in love with open source systems, such as Moodle. However, they often do not realize – until it is too late, that “free” isn’t really free because customization has to constantly exist, support, among other things. What are they using? Time to move on!
